Most Expensive Bed

Written by: tom Filed Under: Luxury, World on April 19th, 2007

This past summer’s Millionaire Fair in Kortrijk, Belgium saw the debut of a magnetic floating bed that pretty much takes the cake for the coolest bed in the world, and the most expensive. Regular, conventional beds and mattresses aren’t seeing a lot of changes to their technology and structure these days, that’s where Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars comes in. The goal in his project was to make a usable artifact that doesn’t employ the standard laws of gravity, but another force to convey its image, like magnetism.

Ruijssenaars reportedly worked on the technology for the most expensive bed for six years in collaboration with Bakker Magnetics. Permanent opposing industrial-strength magnets allow the bed to float around 40cm off the floor and can hold 900kg. This visually pleasing technology could also be applied to other areas in home decor like coffee tables, sofas, and Japanese dining tables. How cool would it be to eat sushi and drink sake off a floating table?

world's most expensive bed

The price of the most expensive bed (for the full-size unit) will run you EU€1,200,000 ($1.6 million US) and the smaller unit, one fifth of the full size costs EU€115,000 ($153,000US). If you are a millionaire and simply must have this eye-catching bed, the people at Universe Architecture would be happy to make it happen for you.

    mashallah!!!

This bed is amazing! I did not think it is possible to make. I love the elements of magnets.
Especially putting n to n or s to s together!! Its so fun! I’ve always loved to have the ability to float.

  7. Posted by lalala 21st July, 2007 at 9:00 pm

how the hell are you suppose to get on top of it?

  8. Posted by Alex 25th July, 2007 at 6:23 pm

Pity you couldn’t take your mobile phone near it, or watch, or laptop PC, or IPod, or… etc.

  9. Posted by derek j. 19th August, 2007 at 2:07 pm

optional accessories include a six foot step ladder to get on top of it.

  10. Posted by Nick 15th September, 2007 at 12:09 pm

whoo man that is one groovy bed

  11. Posted by Aslghasi 26th October, 2007 at 4:06 pm

its 40 cm off ground aka 20ish inches and ropes connect it to the ground so it doesnt float off into space

  12. Posted by Nedal Hubhub 27th November, 2007 at 8:46 am

It looks great but beleive me i would no get near it even if it was for free for one reason that is being around a magnetic forcefeild that is strong enough to lift 900KG would definitly have a carcinogenic effect on your cells.

Sure, any guest would be impressed by the look of the bed, but what the guest’s will probably be thinking about or more so worrying about is not fallng off of it.

  14. Posted by Laszlo 17th February, 2008 at 12:21 am

Ya…it looks cool, but it would void all your credit cards and mess with any pacemakers within 2 blocks.

  15. Posted by Abigail 28th July, 2008 at 12:45 pm

That bed is really cool and pretty.

  16. Posted by Hannah 1st August, 2008 at 8:47 pm

Wow! I so want that bed but it’s waaaaaayyy too expensive for me! It’s pretty tight though! =)

  17. Posted by Dave 12th August, 2008 at 1:15 pm

You know when you’re messing around with magnets making one float then all of a sudden *flip* *SMACK* it spins the other way up and sticks itself Hard to the other magnet?

Yeah… wouldn’t want that to happen whilst you’re on it…

It looks neet, but Im one of those insane people that like being able to get close to my bed without checking for any metal thingies that might decorate the bed in a near future. Call me crazy if you must.

  19. Posted by Rico the Amazin' Wombat 12th August, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Uh, Hoverboard would be the best use of this technology.

  20. Posted by lol 13th August, 2008 at 1:15 am

If you have your cellphone next to it, kiss it goodbye. Don’t wear metal belt buckles or jewelry either. Hell most alarm clocks would get sucked into the magnet and probably stop working.

  21. Posted by Titters 13th August, 2008 at 10:47 am

Does the price include a metal floor?

  22. Posted by nny 17th August, 2008 at 1:02 am

900kgs? so this means no more bringing home fat chicks

  23. Posted by Harry Barracuda 18th August, 2008 at 5:49 am

Would it fit in my new Airbus 380?

  24. Posted by Jamie Collins 19th August, 2008 at 12:33 pm

Thing is, to keep it floating, the magnets can’t allow it to move, otherwise it would flip over and fall to the floor. So yes, it would hover, but it would feel the same as any other bed, if not it would be LESS comfortable

  25. Posted by tim maguire 19th August, 2008 at 3:18 pm

This is great–my first thought was “I have got to get me one of these!” But then I read all the comments and…ohh, yeah, of course.

Better in concept than in practice.

  26. Posted by me 19th August, 2008 at 11:13 pm

    @ lalala
How do you get on your bed?
It’s only 40cm (16″) off the ground, not 40 feet.

  27. Posted by evan 20th August, 2008 at 4:43 pm

    Daddy. I want THAT one.

want want want dood!!! but i wonder if i can hide stuff under it.

it would probably mess up my ipod :(

  28. Posted by Geoff 20th August, 2008 at 6:25 pm

I would be very concerned about the long term effects on our other than physical parts, seeing as the mind and aura are magnetic. Even sleeping permanently in electric fields is believed by some to be a bad idea. But this level of magnetic field?

  29. Posted by Cypher 22nd August, 2008 at 1:12 am

Geoff, Do you not realise that the Earth itself commands massive magnetic fields that are all around us? Ever heard of a compass?
Oh, and this also applies to that guy who said it would be carcinogenic.

  30. Posted by Paul 31st August, 2008 at 8:15 am

Credit cards should be okay (unless you are still using the old style magnetic strip ones). The chips are very resistant to magnetic fields. Also depending on how the magnetic field is managed it may not reach too far beyond the bed and could be shielded from passing through the bed itself. My fear would be if it unlocked from the field and shot off at speed. How much force would it take to knock it off centre?

  31. Posted by ankita 3rd September, 2008 at 7:31 am

Magnetic field (and that too such a strong one), is not a place where you want to be sleeping. it will most definitely damage the brain permanently.

  32. Posted by Smither 10th November, 2008 at 3:25 pm

Good to have a neurologist among us, ankita.

my bed is not so expensive. http://www.jado-steel-style.com

    what a rip off

  35. Posted by jiannis 18th January, 2009 at 8:07 am

i am afraid of the magnetic field that´s going to be under my @@ 8 hours the day …have you thought about it??

  36. Posted by Sam Cornwell 10th February, 2009 at 11:31 am

I wonder if all the magnets may cause long term side effects on the human body.

  37. Posted by marc 20th February, 2009 at 4:18 pm

did have taht one – wasn’t too comfortable

  38. Posted by Yoyowatup 18th April, 2009 at 4:20 pm

K that bed dont look comfy and i wud only lay on it for like 5 ins tops. my brain is 2 precious

  39. Posted by Personne 5th May, 2009 at 8:49 pm

Ever heard of MRI scans (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) ? We’ve studied and been around EMFs long enough to know that there_is_no_danger. This is a super cool application for magnets. To repel one against another is not that hard; to keep the mass centered and static is another thing. Plus I’m sure all the R & D went into shielding stray fields.

UPDATE: News report stated-”Magetnetic Bed Pulls Plate Out Of Man’s Head”…………….stay tuned for entire story on the eleven 0′clock news.

    Just Kidding……

  41. Posted by Tessa 8th July, 2009 at 9:19 pm

wow what a bed!!!!!!! It would never work for me though i would have to clean out under my bed and that wouls stink;)

  42. Posted by Emily 13th July, 2009 at 8:57 am

If it’s hovering, what keeps it in place? Wouldn’t it just sort of float all over the room (assuming the whole floor is metal) like an air hockey puck? Of course, if it floated off the metal, it would hit the floor… also not good for sleeping. Good idea though. It would make a better sculpture than a bed.

  43. Posted by ShoppedAss 14th July, 2009 at 6:08 pm

SHOPPED! That is shopped! It’s photoshoped! I can tell! Because of the pixels! They don’t lie, no siree! And! And the shadows. Yep. The pixels and the shadows. That’s how you can tell! It’s definitely shopped. Oh this thing is SO shopped. I know, I can tell, cause I’m shopped. Trust me, this comment section is probably all shopped too. SHOPPED!

  44. Posted by Chris 17th July, 2009 at 10:22 pm

Would work better as a coffee table.

  45. Posted by Cassie 26th August, 2009 at 2:39 am

Yes, I’ll take the floating bed, the french speaking comfoter and the drug administering pillow thank you… lol

  46. Posted by Chris 28th October, 2009 at 2:33 pm

OK…. I would rather make my own magnetic bed out of just pure junkyard magnest that can be found, join the pieces together by molding, and mage a magnetic platform on the floor. Rather than spend a million on the same thing. Matterfact, I can do one now! (Maybe later on the future, that’s alot of work to do)

  47. Posted by Paul Eng 15th November, 2009 at 12:45 pm

Just what I want. spend the night in a Magnetic Resonance machine…

  48. Posted by Dee 23rd December, 2009 at 8:41 am

Absolutely amazing. Santa Claus, I hope you can fit it down the chimney.

  49. Posted by Hamza 17th January, 2010 at 10:26 am

I went to the fair with my dad. It was cool. As well as buying a couple of fur coats and fun toys i also bought this bed. It is scary at first. it feels like some one is under ur bed and about to through u off the 23th floor apartment. Once you get used to it, it feels so much better. The bed is amazing a goodnight sleep is an, under statement.
