While the Pacific variety isn’t as endangered as the West Atlantic bluefin, it’s quite telling that half of the 600 devices that researchers from Tag-A-Giant attached to Pacific bluefins were returned to the New York-based operation by fishermen seeking the $500 reward for each device. Combine the pressure from fishing with the weather experienced in the region this year and you have a species that may not be around to see 2010.

It certainly doesn’t help that it’s such a tasty fish.

In early 2009, a 282-pound bluefin caught off the northern coast of Oma was sold to a pair of rival restaurateurs who set aside their differences to procure the massive fish for $100,000. In 2001, a 440-pound tuna was sold for the phenomenal price of $220,000.

In 2010, however, the 440-pound tuna’s record was beaten by the sale of a gargantuan 513-pound bluefin. Sold at Tokyo’s Tsukiji market, the most expensive tuna in the world was also purchased by a confederacy of restaurateurs—this time the owners of two sushi restaurants in Japan and the owner of one in Hong Kong.

Part of the reason for these phenomenal prices, of course, is the bluefin’s rarity. While forty-one bluefin tuna were sold at a 2008 auction, only three were sold at the same auction in 2009. The economic crisis, however, may have been a boon for the bluefin population as consumers found the fish too rich for their wallets. In adition, The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas reduced the quota for the 2010 catch to 13,500 tons—around two-thirds of the former quota.

Still, offering a reward for the prize in the fish’s belly might not have been such a good idea after all.

A bluefin tuna fish.

World’s Most Expensive Hot Sauce

Food

Luxury

Bizarre

Condiments

To the rest of us, hot sauce aficionados may seem a little crazy. The hottest of sauces may seem like bottled pain to us, but to them it’s a delectable condiment. Luckily for us, the most expensive hot sauce in the world isn’t one of those.

Cackalacky Spice Sauce is rated fewer than 1,000 units on the Scoville scale, which measures the capsaicin content—or “heat”—of a hot sauce or pepper and tops out at 16,000,000 for pure capsaicin. What it lacks in piquancy, though, it makes up for in flavor. According to the CEO and President of Peppers.com, who hold a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest hot sauce collection, Cackalacky is “the best tasting spice sauce commercially available.” The sauce is flavored with yams, burgundy wine, aged chiles and other spices.

Of course, Cackalacky Spice Sauce alone is only $5.99 for a bottle. In 2005, however, Cackalacky released its Single-Batch Private Reserve Stock. The Private Reserve came in a five-ounce bottle, autographed by Cackalacky’s brand creator and “Ambassador of Good Taste,” Page Skelton. It sold for an eye-popping $98,786.

This isn’t Cacklacky’s first off-the-wall promotion. The company’s website also features recipes for Spiced Barbecue Ice Cream and Spiced Chicken Lollipops.

World’s Most Expensive Gin

Food

Luxury

World

Alcohol

Drinks

Gin

Gin is made by flavoring pure grain alcohol with juniper berries and other natural flavors. Bresse chickens, from their namesake area in France, are valued for their gamey flavor and tender flesh while Silkie chickens are valued as show chickens for their almost mammalian plumage. The Sussex chickens offered by Greenfire Farms, however, may be the most expensive chickens in the world.

Sussex chickens are a dual-purpose breed. They’re useful for both their egg-laying capacity—up to 250 eggs per year—and their fat, meaty bodies. As the breed’s name suggests, the Sussex chicken comes from Sussex County in England and only four of the eight different varieties of Sussex chicken are widely available in the US.

Greenfire Farms offers two of the varieties less common in the US, the Silver Sussex and the Coronation Sussex, for a hefty price. The Silver is black with prevalent streaks of white and silver while the Coronation is an almost opalescent white. Greenfire offers both of these bloodlines at $750 for six day-old chicks.

Coronation and Silver Sussex chickens

World’s Most Expensive Lunch

Food

Luxury

Lunch

Truffles

Wine

View Larger Map Nello’s Restaurant Manhattan’s Nello’s restaurant on the Upper East Side may have hosted the most expensive lunch in the world as Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich and nine other guests dined in for $52,000. La Bonnotte is so fragile, in fact, that it would’ve gone extinct between World Wars I and II if not for a group of devotees to the pricey potato.

The potato’s flavor is said to be both earthy and salty, owing its complexities at least partially to the presence of algae and seaweed in the soil.

La Bonnotte can be purchased from ritzy restaurants in France and the Netherlands until around May 15th. Moose House, a 59-acre moose farm located in northern Sweden, is where the cheese is produced from three foundling moose named Gullan, Haelga, and Juna.

The moose are unusually tame, which is the only reason Moose House owners Christopher and Ulla Johannson can collect milk for the cheese. Even then, they can only be milked between May and September and the process takes about 2 hours per animal, hence the outstanding price of the cheese.

The most expensive cheese in the world is 12% fat and 12% protein and about 660 lbs are produced annually. While its historical prevalence meant it was nearly synonymous with autumn in Japan, the introduction of an insect that kills the trees under which the mushroom grows has caused a dramatic decrease in the number of matsutake mushrooms. A method for farming the matsutake has yet to be developed, which means the lack of trees from which to harvest these mushrooms naturally is a serious problem for the species.

The world’s most expensive mushroom can be purchased for around $1,000 per pound, though prices for specific mushrooms may reach up to $2,000 per pound. One such moment happened at the 2007 Kentucky Derby, when the attending Queen Elizabeth II was presented with the world’s most expensive Canadian whisky.

“Canadian whisky” refers to any whisky that is mashed, distilled and aged at least three years in a 700 L or smaller wooden barrel, all within Canadian borders. By Canadian law, any such whisky may also be labeled “rye whisky”—even if low rye content would prevent it from being labeled such elsewhere. Crown Royal Canadian Blended Whisky, one of the most popular Canadian whiskies, was originally brewed in 1939 to commemorate the first Royal Tour of Canada by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the late Queen Mother). The Crown Royal brand is now owned by Diageo, the world’s largest producer of spirits.

The presentation of Crown Royal’s Extra Rare Heritage Blend to Her Royal Majesty hearkens back to that inaugural event. The expensive whisky’s high rye content can be attributed to the rare barrels selected by Crown Royal’s master blender, Andrew MacKay, who supervised its production. In deference to the venue chosen for the presentation of the exclusive blend, Diageo commissioned Casey Hyland of Glassworks in Louisville to create the bottle, which is etched with 24-karat gold leaf for lettering.

While the most expensive Canadian whisky in the world is obviously not for sale, it has an estimated value of over $10,000.

Most Expensive Bourbon Whiskey

Food

Luxury

United States

Alcohol

Drinks

Whiskey

Bourbon whiskey, like Champagne, is named after the region from which it comes—Bourbon, Kentucky. After all, a pair of cantaloupes just sold for quite a hefty sum in Japan’s Sapporo City Central Wholesale Markets.

The world’s most expensive cantaloupes are a pair of Yubari melons and were the first auction of the 2008 season. They had previously been judged the best pair and were purchased by the owner of a nearby seafood lunchbox and souvenir business. It had some competition—100 melons grown by farmers from Yubari were also judged.

Yubari, while famous for its sweet and high-quality melons, used to be a coal-mining town. The article was so successful that they’ve published a new survey every year since the original was published. It’s called the Big Mac Index and, for our purposes, the most important thing it can tell us is where to buy the world’s most expensive Big Mac.

The Big Mac—consisting of two 1.6 oz beef patties, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onion and special sauce served on a sesame seed bun—is McDonald’s signature sandwich. It was created in 1968 in Uniontown, Penn. by McDonald’s franchisee Jim Delligatti. Thankfully, the names he’d coined for the burger, “The Aristocrat” and the “Blue Ribbon Burger,” didn’t stick. An Advertising Secretary in McDonald’s corporate office was responsible for the name of the Big Mac. Since then, it has gained international recognition.

The most expensive Big Macs in the world come from Denmark, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland. A Big Mac in Denmark will cost you 27.75 Danish kroner ($5.08 US). The same sandwich costs 6.30 Swiss francs ($5.20) or 40 Norwegian kroner ($6.88). The most expensive Big Mac in the world can be purchased in Iceland. It’ll cost you a whopping 469 kronur ($7.61).
Conversely, the cheapest Big Macs in the world can be purchased in Hong Kong and China, where they can be purchased for 12 dollars ($1.54) and 11 Yuan ($1.45) respectively.

While the Big Mac Index, lacking consideration for the many factors in the cost of a Big Mac that may not be present for other goods, provides a somewhat simplistic and flawed view of purchasing power parity, it’s the best tool available if you want to know where to purchase the world’s most expensive Big Mac.

Related Info

Most Popular Fast Food in America

Most Expensive Grill

Food

Luxury

Appliances

Kitchen

Men

We may be close to the end of this year’s grilling season, but that doesn’t mean you can’t drool over this feature-packed grill. It follows, then, that drinking the most expensive champagne requires the most expensive champagne glass.

Enter John Calleija, designer of a pair of champagne glasses sure to put any others to shame. Adorned with 1,700 diamonds—both white and a rare argyle pink—these glasses were hand carved from a pair of 8kg blocks of quartz crystal. The glasses are nearly 6 inches tall, over half a pound apiece and share between them 15 carats of diamonds.

Calleija, wishing to expand his work into luxury goods, drew diamond-covered letter openers, scissors, chopsticks and even salt and pepper shakers before hitting upon the more conventional idea of a pair of luxurious champagne glasses. An anonymous client, upon seeing the design, immediately commissioned them and plans to make them into family heirlooms.

So how much did this anonymous businessman pay for the world’s most expensive champagne glasses? A mere $400,000 allowed him to secure this sparkling legacy.

Top 4 Most Expensive Burgers

Food

Luxury

World

Charity

Fast Food

New York

Sandwich

Truffles

Wagyu

Just because the hamburger is undoubtedly a signature fast food item, doesn’t mean that you can’t treat yourself and empty your pockets by tasting one of the world’s most expensive burgers. For those with money to blow, there are some very pricey—and hopefully very tasty—burgers available, and you’ll never guess who has recently come out with the most expensive burger in the world.

The Fleurburger

#4 FleurBurger 5000 – around $75

Are you willing to part with $5,000 for one, though? Renowned chef Hubert Keller thinks you might be. His FleurBurger 5000 is available at Fleur de Lys, a traditional French restaurant located in Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. They’ll even mail a certificate to your home just to prove that you ate the world’s most expensive hamburger.

So how do you rationalize a five grand price tag for a hamburger? Well, you could start with the fact that the burger itself is made of Kobe beef. You could, then, move on to the foie gras—that’s duck or goose liver—and black truffles with which the burger is topped. You could even point out that the hamburger is served on a brioche truffle bun and is garnished with a sauce containing even more truffles. Then again, it could be the bottle of Chateau Pétrus 1990 and Ichendorf Brunello stemware, specially imported from Italy, which you get to take home. Yeah, that might be it.

Of course, if you actually want the world’s most expensive burger, rather than the most expensive burger-and-wine combo, then you may have to look elsewhere. The Fleurburger can be ordered by itself for a mere $75.

#3 The Tri-Beef Burger – $125

The Tri-Beef Burger

One expensive burger was created in 2006 at the Old Homestead Steakhouse in Boca Raton, Florida. Called the Tri-Beef Burger, this is made of a blend of three different kinds of beef—American Prime, Japanese Wagyu and Argentine beef. The hamburger is served with signature Chipotle ketchup made with truffles and champagne. As if the beef isn’t reason enough to purchase this expensive burger, the restaurant’s owners donate $10 of every sale of the $125 burger to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

#2 The Richard Nouveau Burger $175

The Richard Nouveau

The Richard Nouveau is a more recent entry into the most expensive burger hall of fame. Named after the fictional writer of PocketChange, an online newsletter about NYC’s most expensive offerings, the Richard Nouveau is available at the Wall Street Burger Shoppe. The ten-ounce Kobe beef burger is topped with black truffles, seared foie gras, aged Gruyere cheese, wild mushrooms and flakes of gold leaf. Like the Fleurburger, it’s also served on a brioche bun. The burger was created when PocketChange’s Jeremy Abelson suggested that the Burger Shoppe’s co-owner, Heather Tierney, outdo the $120 burger offered by another local eatery. With the Richard Nouveau’s $175 price tag, they’ve clearly done so.

#1 Burger King’s The Burger – about $186

The Burger

Hot on the heels of Wall Street Burger, surprisingly enough, is Burger King. Yes, this monolithic fast food giant has decided to live up to its name by producing the world’s most expensive burger. Simply called “The Burger,” this costly hamburger is available only at a West London branch of the restaurant. Luckily for those among you who’ll be taking your private jets to Burger King for lunch, The Burger can be pre-ordered by phone so you needn’t wait.

The world’s most expensive hamburger is made, as usual, with Wagyu beef. It is also decked with white truffles, onion tempura prepared in Cristal champagne and some of Spain’s finest Pata Negra ham. All of this is presented in an Iranian saffron and truffle bun.

The Burger is priced at £95 (about $186 US). While it has been derided as a cheap marketing stunt, proceeds from The Burger will benefit a local charity, Help A London Child. All things considered, I’d say it’s at least an expensive marketing stunt.

Related Info

Most Popular Fast Food in America

Most Expensive Box of Chocolates

Food

Luxury

Chocolate

Desserts

New York

We’ve all heard the saying, “Life is like a box of chocolates.” If you’re fabulously wealthy, though, then maybe your life is more like a steamer trunk full of chocolates. In any case, MarieBelle New York’s Chocolate Picnic Steamer Trunk may just be the most expensive box of chocolates in the world.
MarieBelle has a reputation for making some of the world’s finest chocolates, which is quite extraordinary considering they only opened their doors in 2000. A box of only four pieces of their chocolates costs $12.

Now consider the fact that the Chocolate Picnic Steamer Trunk contains 500 pieces of chocolate ganache, five pounds of chocolate bark and croquettes, eighty ounces of Aztec hot chocolate in four tins, a twenty-ounce tin of Aztec Iced Chocolate, eight Aztec Hot Chocolate Bars, a teapot and infuser, two china teacups, a leather-bound journal and a small library of books on chocolate.

That’s bound to be a bit pricey, isn’t it?

Well, it may come as something of a shock that the steamer trunk only costs $15,000. Of course, you also have to purchase it in person from their New York store. Surely that will make up for the incredibly low price of the world’s most expensive box of chocolates.
