RIM’s BlackBerry has come a long way in the years since its introduction as a two-way pager in 1999. Known for its push e-mail feature, the BlackBerry series held a place among the elite smartphones before anyone had even heard of an iPhone.

If that doesn’t scream “Cover it in diamonds,” well, I don’t know what does.

Amosu BlackBerry Pearl Diamond Edition – $88,000

Amosu released their BlackBerry Pearl Diamond Edition in 2008. The diamonds used to make this particular phone were recyclable—owners could have them refit to their next BlackBerry when the Pearl became obsolete. The Amosu BlackBerry even came with a year of access to an exclusive concierge service allowing purchasers to enjoy a variety of luxury services.

Amosu Curva Diamond BlackBerry – $191,000

Not one to rest on his laurels, Alexander Amosu has created a brand new exclusive BlackBerry customization. The Amosu Curva is covered in 4,494 brilliant cut VS1 diamonds totalling about 28.42 carats set in a coat of 18-karat gold. The best part, though, is that only three of these luxury smartphones will ever be made. Each purchaser will have the option of having their name engraved on the back. Like Amosu’s previous offering, Amosu Curva owners will enjoy a free year-long global concierge service in 44 cities.

Knalihs Athem BlackBerry Bold Limited Diamond Edition – ???

Swiss luxury designer Knalihs Athem has also created a suitably expensive BlackBerry. Each Knalihs Athem BlackBerry Bold Limited Diamond Edition is customized with the buyer’s choice of pink, yellow, black, champagne and white diamonds. The back of the phone is also customized with leather, crocodile or snake skin, or denim—each available in at least two different colors. Of course, it also has all the standard features of the BlackBerry Bold. Unfortunately, the price of Knalihs Athem’s expensive BlackBerry seems to have been filed under “If you have to ask, you’ll never know.”

Whether you’re into bird watching, hunting or *cough* private surveillance, a pair of expensive binoculars can be a useful thing. That’s why Leica produces several lines of luxury binoculars, including the most expensive binoculars in the world.

Leica’s Duovid 10+15×50 features a 50mm lens and can switch between 10x magnification and a 15x magnification comparable to spotting scopes. It also features tactile rubber armoring to ensure a steady grip no matter the conditions. The expensive binoculars even come with a tripod for stargazing.

The Duovid 10+15×50 retails for $3,245. Unfortunately for those of you who’d like it in hot pink or neon orange, it’s available in only one color—black. Sad, isn’t it?

Carbon fiber’s popularity in iPhone cases may be attributed to the material’s toughness and low density. After all, part of the appeal of the iPhone is that it’s so slim, so a lightweight protective material is all the more attractive. Check out these three luxury iPhone cases and you’ll see why they’re some of the most expensive iPhone cases in the world.

Case-mate iPhone 3G/3GS Carbon Fiber Leather Case
$49.99

This luxury iPhone case is made with a rare leather—mainly used in high-end aftermarket cars—covering an impact resistant molded shell. The exclusive case is available only in black and includes a screen protector.

Case-mate iPhone 3G/3GS Carbon Fiber Leather Case/Holster Combo
$79.99

Made with the same rare leather as their slightly-less-premium case above, this is Case-mate’s finest iPhone case. In fact, it’s available only for a limited time. Once their supply is gone, that’s it. The case also comes with full face screen protection and a holster made of the same carbon fiber leather as the case itself. This costly case can be purchased in either red or black.

DRO Concepts’ Carbon Fiber iPhone 3G Case
$92.99

The world’s most expensive carbon fiber iPhone case is an improvement on a similar case by the now-defunct Belch Co. (can’t see why they went out of business). This handcrafted case features four layers of carbon fiber with a scratch-resistant gloss finish and a neoprene lining. It even has a removable bottom so you can dock it without the hassle of removing the whole case.

GnG “Golden Delicious”
$100,000+

This extravagant case is the culmination of twelve months of development. The case features a 1mm subshell made with 140 grams of 18k gold, a carbon fiber inlay and about 200 diamonds. The outer frame features another 400 diamonds in the logo, which may be customized. As a customizable luxury item, however, prices may vary widely based on the materials needed.

Why not spend some money to protect your precious iPhone? These luxury iPhone cases are made from carbon fiber, Tuscan leather, mahogany, ostrich skin, alligator skin and even gold embellished with diamonds and have prices ranging from $80 to over $100,000.

10. Vaja i-Volution Top SP Holster
$80+

If you already think your iPhone is too big, and want to keep it slim, the Vaja i-Volution Top SP may be the case for you. The leather case protects your phone’s screen with a layer of ABS thermoplastic. With the flip-case opened, you have access to all of the iPhone’s features, including the headphone jack, SIM card and vibrate slider. The speakers and camera lens are also exposed. The i-Volution Top SP Holster starts at $80 and is available in a range of styles and colors.

9. DRO Concepts’ Carbon Fiber iPhone 3G Case
$92.99

This carbon fiber case is an improvement on a similar case by the now-defunct Belch Co. (can’t see why they went out of business). This handcrafted case features four layers of carbon fiber with a scratch-resistant gloss finish and a neoprene lining. It even has a removable bottom so you can dock it without the hassle of removing the whole case.

8. Miniot iWood
$95

Where can you find a sophisticated, almost antique appearance wrapped up with a name that would make any horny teenager—and many adults—snicker with very unsophisticated glee? Try the iWood case. It’s… well… it’s iWood.

7. Orbino Tuscan Leather Tasca Case
$119
Tuscan leather handstitched with premium waxed thread at Centro Stile Orbino in Italy makes this flap-top case a unique commodity. The Tasca case is hand lacquered, as well, with four coats of black, brown, tan or red lacquer. The leather lining provides a snug fit for your iPhone 3G or 3GS.

6. Swarovski Wildcat
$299.99

Featuring Swarovski crystals arranged by hand in a leopard-spot pattern, each of these luxury iPhone cases is completely unique. The easily snapped-on case is supposed to be as protective as it is aesthetically pleasing, but Ultra Case doesn’t list the materials used to create the “crystal hard case.”

5. Orbino Strada
up to $319

There are other iPhone cases out there made of the “finest” Italian leather, but what makes the Strada unique is its patented belt clip/pedestal. Not only is this belt clip removable, it’s also made of palladium metal and it can even be used to prop up your iPhone so you can watch videos at your desk. After all, you probably don’t have any other viewing apparatus there. The Strada also features a screen protector and connector access. Oh, it’s also hand-stitched. That automatically makes it at least twice as good. The Strada starts at $99, but you can pay more to get one made from one of a variety of gentle woodland creatures—from ostriches ($249) to crocodiles ($319).

4. Softbank BB Samurai iPhone cases
$1,000

Softbank BB is bringing the aesthetic appeal of traditional Japanese lacquerware to your iPhone. These five cases commemorate five famous samurai from Japan’s storied history—(from left to right) conquerer Oda Nobunaga; one-eyed warlord Date Masamune; tactician and “Dragon of Echigo,” Uesagi Kenshin; famed lover Naoe Kanetsugu and triumphant underdog Yukimura Sanada. The cases were created in collaboration with 350-year-old lacquerware company Zohiko and each design comes with a different cloth pouch.

3. Louis Vuitton iPhone cases
up to $1,120

Louis Vuitton is now offering four different flavors of iPhone case: Monogram Canvas, Taiga Leather, Epi Leather and Alligator Skin. Everyone knows adding the LV logo to something makes it practically priceless. But these prices range from $225 for the Monogram Canvas case to $1120 for the Alligator Skin case. Unfortunately, these costly cases commit the cardinal sin of covering the phone’s screen.

2. Diamond iPhone Case
$20,000

If you think buying a case worth fifty times the phone it carries makes perfect sense, then this is the case for you. With its 42 VVS1 diamonds (3.5 carats), it’s the most bling for your buck. That’s only $5,714 per carat. Great deal, huh?

1. GnG “Golden Delicious”
$100,000+

What is the most expensive iPhone case in the world? This extravagant case is the culmination of twelve months of development. The case features a 1mm subshell made with 140 grams of 18k gold, a carbon fiber inlay and about 200 diamonds. The outer frame features another 400 diamonds in the logo, which may be customized. As a customizable luxury item, however, prices may vary widely based on the materials needed.

iPhone apps generate a lot of buzz in this Apple world of ours, whether they’re useful, entertaining, offensive or just plain expensive. Below is a list of the ten most expensive iPhone apps. Are they useful? In some cases, that’s debatable. After all, the most expensive iPhone app in the App Store’s brief history was little more than a screen saver—that is, before Apple pulled it following user complaints.

XA1	(Mark’s) – $179.99

This realtime spectrum analyzer uses the iPhone’s microphone or, in the case of iPod Touch users, a third party microphone to provide graphical feedback for mixers and other sound engineers. For those who want to give the app a test run, XA1 Lite is also available for a mere $9.99.

Interpath (Room4 Group Limited) – $179.99

Intended for medical pathologists, Interpath grabs images from a supported image server—sold separately, of course—and loads them on the iPhone for remote diagnosis. I can’t imagine a cheaper way of doing that. Unlike XA1, this expensive app’s demo version is free.

Nursing Constellation Plus (Skyscape) – $179.99

Another medical app, Nursing Constellation Plus is intended for use by, er, nurses. Big surprise, that. The app has a variety of reference tools, including a drug dosing calculation tool, medical dictionary and a book of diagnostic tests.

ROSIE Home Automation (Savant Systems LLC) – $199.99

Finally, something really freakin’ cool—ROSIE Home Automation turns your iPhone or iPod Touch into a remote control for ROSIE-enabled lighting, security, audio/video and other systems.

iDcrm (Numenes) – $199.99

This app is intended to sync with Microsoft Dynamics CRM (Customer Relationship Management) and provide all of the same functionality. It also has the ability to work offline.

Lexi-Dental Complete (Lexi-Comp) – $299.99

Much like Nursing Constellation Plus, Lexi-Dental Complete is a library of reference material—except for dentists. As such, their promotional image is GROSS. A slightly less expensive version, Lexi-Dental Select, is also available.

Mobile Cam Viewer (mobiDEOS, Inc.) – $349.99

Mobile Cam Viewer allows monitoring and control of NVR, DVR or Video Server surveillance systems. Of course, seeing as this is an app for the security conscious, access to the systems is encrypted.

PDR Quote (Labra PTY LTD.) – $349.99

Used to generate quotes for PDR (Paintless Dent Repair) and other automobile repairs, PDR Quote contains a database of over 900 automobile makes and models and allows prices to be customized and adjusted for tax codes.

MATG (MyAccountsToGo) – $449.99

Two varieties of this app are available—SAP BusinessOne and Dynamics GP. Both allow access to their respective financial management systems and may be synced via secure FTP, HTTP or HTTPS.

iRa Pro – $899.99

Intended for security professionals who need to maintain unlimited mobility, Ira Pro allows users to monitor IP-based surveillance equipment. Much like Mobile Cam Viewer, above, the most expensive iPhone app interfaces with a video management server to provide that extra sense of security that comes from knowing that you can always check in on whatever it is you’re protecting.

It’s larger than some living room furniture and over 170 lbs—not exactly a mobile device—but it may just be the world’s most expensive iPod accessory. Switzerland-based Geneva’s GenevaSound Home Theater system embodies the concepts for which Apple has become famous—utility and simplicity.

Each GenevaSound system is completely housed in a lacquered wooden cabinet that not only belies the sophistication of its inner workings but also ensures the sound is natural and warm. The Home Theater features seven individually powered speakers—2 x 1″ tweeters, 4 x 5 1/4″ woofers and a 12″ sub-woofer—and an equal number of digital hi-fi 100-Watt amplifiers. The horizontal surface is 66” x 21”, so there’s ample space for a high-definition television, Xbox 360, Playstation 3 or whatever else you want to put on it. The system also features a CD player, FM Radio, and both digital and analog line-in.

It also has a universal iPod/iPhone dock that can deliver both audio and video output from your iPod to your home theater.

Am I stretching the definition of “iPod accessory”? Perhaps I am, but kindly note that nearly every promotional image of this extraordinary piece of equipment features one of Apple’s iconic devices and the word “iPod” displayed on the GenevaSound’s display.

The most expensive iPod accessory in the world has a retail price of $3,999. Geneva also produces GenevaSound System Models M, L and XL—audio systems intended for rooms sized from small/medium to extra large—for $799-$1,449.

Want to own the most expensive Xbox 360 in the world? Replace the boring old faceplate with this one and you’ll have it.

This unique faceplate was auctioned on eBay in 2005. Made of 999.9 ounces of solid 24k gold, the faceplate was cast with access to all the ports and receivers necessary to enjoy your Xbox to its fullest extent.

Sadly, information on whether or not it sold, and for how much, is scarce. What I can tell you, though, is that it had an opening bid of $36,000.

If you can’t find a solid gold faceplate for your Xbox 360, then why not try the next best thing—or, rather, the next most expensive thing. Featuring the popular Tomb Raider heroine, Lara Croft, this extravagant case is made with 43,000 crystals.

Only a few of these Xbox cases are being produced and sold in Germany, where it commands a price of around $11,000.

Airsoft is a sport much like paintball with its military simulations, replicas of real firearms, etc. The only thing missing, of course, is the pain—airsoft players must rely on the honesty of their opponents. Given the level of seriousness with which the game is taken, it’s no surprise that players are willing to dole out beaucoup bucks for their airsoft weaponry.

This offering by RedWolf Custom Guns may be the world’s most expensive airsoft rifle. It’s a Systema PTW (Professional Training Weapon), which can handle both Systema M90 and M150 cylinders. The piece also includes a custom adjustable ergonomic stock, Prime CNC receiver with STAG markings, a customized but fully functional Magpul MIAD adjustable grip and a 12” stainless steel Air Surgeon outer barrel. Use of this weapon may qualify as overkill—it fires at an amazing velocity of 460 feet per second.

The most expensive airsoft rifle is up for grabs on Red Wolf’s site for $4,288. If you can find an airsoft gun more expensive than that, we’d love to hear about it.

Netbooks, smaller and less powerful laptops meant to be used in conjunction with a host of web-based applications, entered the public consciousness with the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) Association’s goal of distributing the ultraportable computers throughout developing countries. Now netbooks like Asus’ Eee PC and Acer’s Aspire One are starting to overtake the laptop PC market.

So, you know, eventually someone will have to go and stick some diamonds on one.

Until then, the most expensive netbook in the world is this unique Aspire One painted in the Kyo Yuzen tradition by UFO-Hayashi, a Japanese artist known for his work on iPods, phones and other gadgets. The painting represents life in its spring, rebounding after the long and cold winter. Painting the device took the artist around three months to finish and shavings from nautilus shells were used in the process.

As for its specs, the unique netbook features the Aspire One’s typical 1.6 GHz Atom processor, 1 GB memory and a 120 GB hard drive.

The world’s most expensive netbook is up for grabs on eBay until May 1st with a starting bid of $3,000.

September 9th, 2009 will see the release of The Beatles: Rock Band. The latest game in the Rock Band series of music video games, The Beatles will be a standalone game based on the band that started the British Invasion in 1964. It will also be the most expensive game on the Wii console—even without peripherals like guitars and drumsets.

The game is a collaboration between MTV, Harmonix—developers of the Rock Band series—and The Beatles’ Apple Corps. Ltd. (which does not make iPods). The game’s developers are striving to make it historically accurate and input from Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and Yoko Ono will only help them in this endeavor.

While Wii games are generally priced at $49.99, MTV has decided that The Beatles: Rock Band for Wii will have the same pricepoint as its later-generation counterparts on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360—$59.99. A $250 Limited Edition Premium bundle featuring the microphone, drums and guitar will also be available.

Actually, don’t answer that.

White Lake’s golden USB flash drive is, at least, sure to make an impression. Custom made with either fourteen- or eighteen-karat gold and maybe even some diamonds thrown into the mix, the most expensive USB drive is guaranteed to suit your individual personality—and by “personality” I mean “the gaping hole in your wallet.”

You can own this expensive flash drive for around $2,800 without diamonds or $3,500 with them. In fact, White Lake is so sure that you’ll want this revolutionary device that they don’t even bother to mention its storage capacity.

Luckily, White Lake’s offering has been trumped by a newer and more original flash drive—the Mnemosyne. This 16GB flash drive defies the standard USB stick format, instead taking the form of a puzzle cube. The drive was hand-crafted from solid aluminum and buffed to a mirror finish by the fine people at Italian/Japanese design firm Toshi Satoji Design. The 3” cube is aptly named after the Greek titan and personification of memory.

The world’s most expensive USB flash drive can be purchased from Japanese-language seller Solid Alliance for the hefty price of 1 million yen (US $10,685).

Vibrators and “marital aids” may be available at your local drugstore in this day and age, but you’re not likely to see this lascivious luxury item warming the shelf at CVS. The gold-plated Yva is, after all, the world’s most expensive vibrator.

Made in Sweden by Lelo, the 18-karat gold-plated vibrator boasts a bent-egg shape that allows it to fit over the pubic bone. Its quiet motor has a number of settings and the splash-proof vibrator can be chilled or heated to expand the already impressive variety of sensations it provides.

The most expensive vibrator in the world has a suggested retail price of $1500, but can be had for as little as $999. It comes with a charger and a finely-crafted wooden box with a satin carrying pouch and 1-year warranty.

The Sennheiser Orpheus may be a great pair of headphones for audiophiles, but what about those who prefer style over sound quality? Well, that’s what the world’s most expensive earbuds are for.

Created by Thomas Heyerdahl of Heyerdahl Jewellery, the same person behind the iDiamond iPod, these blinged out buds aren’t just a one-off for charity—they were carefully constructed in a series of 1,000. Each pair of iDiamond ear earphones is made of 18 karat gold set with 204 diamonds (1.65 carats total). Each pair is numbered, so you know that your pair is entirely unique.

Of course, getting one now may be a hassle. They were distributed to high end jewelry stores in March of 2008 and, at the time, sold for $6,400. Considering their limited availability, purchasing a pair now might require a considerably larger investment.

Nothing drives home the fact that information is a commodity in this day and age like a survey of the world’s most expensive e-books. For example, one such book is an apparently untitled book available through DailyVariance.com which to improve its purchaser’s poker skills so much that it pays for its $1,850 price tag. In fact, the authors rely on their customers’ own greed to keep the book from being distributed once their DRM is inevitably cracked. After all, poker secrets are no good when they’re no longer secrets.

But $1,850 is a drop in the bucket compared to the world’s most expensive e-book. “Nuclear Energy,” available through Amazon on their Kindle e-book reader, comprises three volumes of “Energy Technologies” and is intended for use by scientists, engineers and students (yeah, right) who need a reference for all the technologies necessary to harness and use nuclear energy.

So how much is this essential—for anyone who wants to build a nuclear power plant, at least—e-book? The print copy costs $7,790. Luckily for Kindle users, the 602-page e-book costs 20% less at $6,232! I know I’m excited—aren’t you?

If you think your cell phone bill is high, try moving to New Zealand. According to a recent survey by the Kiwis’ Commerce Commission, New Zealanders are paying for some of the most expensive cell phone plans in the world.

Due to a network duopoly between service providers Vodafone and Telecom, the typical New Zealander pays between 23% and 46% more than the average price of a cell phone plan in OECD member countries (including the US, UK and Australia, among others).

In fact, Telecom’s Flexi Anytime plan is the most expensive mobile phone plan of any member country—which may just make it the most expensive cell phone plan in the world—at 177% of the average. Users of this plan can expect to pay 189.50 NZD (about $102 US) for their first 450 minutes. Compare this to the $39.99 price of the average 450-minute plan in the US.

The Commerce Commission does warn, however, that their report should only be taken as an indicator as it doesn’t include several recently introduced budget plans.

If you’re one of the richest of the rich, your kitchen is no doubt full of expensive appliances for all your culinary needs—and that’s just the one you use to make your snacks. Unfortunately for you, it’s not yet complete if you don’t have the world’s most expensive refrigerator.

Northland, a 100-year-old provider of custom refrigerators, has really outdone itself with this 72” side-by-side refrigerator/freezer. It has a glass door and stainless steel wrap, features “daylight” interior lighting and easily cleaned glass shelves. The spacious fridge has a total capacity of 48.3 cubic feet.

So how much is the most expensive refrigerator in the world? At just under $11,000, you’ve no excuse NOT to buy this fancy refrigerator—unless you’re Joe Six-Pack, Joe the Plumber or Joe the Guy Who Writes Things on the Internet.

Based on the military’s HMMWV, or Humvee, the Hummer brand proved popular in the States. In the heyday of Hummer fever, it not only invaded the links but also produced a pricey golf cart. That’s right; the favored gas guzzler of football players everywhere is also the world’s most expensive golf cart.

Licensed by General Motors, the Hummer H2 body kit is built over a 3.75 hp aluminum club car chassis. The electric cart is an NEV capable of speeds up to 20 mph and includes headlights, turn signals and brake lights. As for convenience, the cart also includes a cooler under the hood, storage under the seat, a tinted windshield, fog lights, glove boxes, a fold-down tailgate and, of course, drink holders. It’s stamped with H2 logos on the sides and rear bumper and has another pair of bumpers embroidered into the seats. It even has the option of either a carbon fiber or wood grain dashboard.

Of course, it wouldn’t be the most expensive golf cart in the world if it were cheap. The Hummer H2 golf cart is priced at $19,999. At least you won’t have to buy gas for it!

FAO Schwarz and Neiman Marcus had someone just like you in mind when they sold the most expensive go-kart in the world.

This stunningly accurate replica of the Ferrari Testarossa is nine feet long and hand-built. It features a 5hp Briggs & Stratton engine, an automatic transmission with two speeds and reverse and an electronic ignition. The kart weighs 615 lb and is capable of speeds up to 30 miles per hour.

The luxury go-kart also includes a functional CD player, retractable headlights and all the other lights and signals of a real Testarossa. It’s pimped out with adjustable seats and leather upholstery. The steering wheel even features a working horn because, hey, every parent loves toys that make noise.

At $50,000, the world’s most expensive go-kart is priced perfectly for the financially savvy child, whether they want to drive it alone or get together with some friends and practice for a future career as Nick Hogan’s cellmate.

Paintball was originally inspired by Richard Connell’s The Most Dangerous Game, a short story in which a Russian big-game hunter, bored with hunting animals, turns to hunting humans for sport. Since its inception in 1976, the game has exploded in popularity. Each year, over 10 million people play paintball in the US alone. It’s little wonder, then, that companies like WDP and Planet Eclipse seek to outdo each other by making the fanciest and most expensive paintball guns.

WDP Angel G7 – $1,500

Last year, WDP wowed paintball enthusiasts with the Angel G7. Billed as the fastest paintball gun in the world, it was capable of firing thirty-one pellets per second at a muzzle velocity of 300 feet per second. It was also the most expensive paintball gun at the time, priced at just under $1,500. That didn’t keep it from selling, though; WDP sold a thousand of these expensive guns in just one week.

Planet Exclipse SL74 – $1,995

<img src='http://most-expensive.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/expensive-paintball-gun.jpg'' alt='World’s most expensive paintball gun' />

More recently, however, Planet Eclipse unveiled their SL74. Weighing less than two pounds, it may just be the lightest paintball gun in the world. The gun also offers less kick than previous models in the series and even features a mechanism to allow its user to choose between lower pressure and a higher shot count. Of course, it’s the most expensive paintball gun in the world; it’s priced at $1,995.

Breda M37 8mm Machine Gun replica by Real Action Paintball – $4,999

Blowing WDP and Planet Eclipse out of the water in terms of price, this custom made replica by Real Action Paintball weighs 30 lbs and can fire in semi-automatic, short burst and full auto modes. The gun features at least one major point of departure from the weapon on which it’s based—the Q-Loader automatic paintball feed system. The gun is custom built from an Airgun Designs Automag RT Pro paintgun, which features x-valve, a level 10 anti-chop bolt and an ultra-light trigger pull kit. Of course, being a custom, it takes four weeks for the thing to be built and delivered.

Unfortunately, electronic guns like these may not perform so well in woodsball—paintball played in a wooded area rather than an indoor location—as the firing mechanisms may freeze up if you get them dirty. In these cases, it may be best to go with a less expensive, mechanical gun.

For years, audiophiles have been dishing out dollar after dollar to attain the highest level of sonic perfection. Have they achieved it or have their efforts been a total waste? There are many who will argue one way or the other but, whatever the case, expensive speaker cables aren’t going away.

Pear ANJOU Speaker Cables – $7,250

Pear Cable Corporation’s ANJOU Speaker Cable, a 12 foot length of which retails for $7,250, reportedly “allow new levels of sonic accuracy to be explored.” Supposedly, this exploration is accomplished by “proprietary hybrid geometry,” “ultra low electrical reactance” and “fully annealed 99.999% pure oxygen free Copper.”

In response to a glowing review by Dave Clark, editor of Positive Feedback, in which he refers to the cables as “very danceable”, the James Randi Educational Foundation offered a million-dollar prize to anyone who can prove beyond the shadow of doubt that these expensive speaker cables actually perform better (to the human ear, mind you) than Monster Cable’s $80 HDMI cables. While the prize is available to anyone who can prove the superiority of the ANJOU cables, the JREF unabashedly directs this challenge at Mr. Clark himself. In fact, the JREF apparently has many such unclaimed prizes for audiophiles who can prove that certain exotic piece of audio equipment are actually as exceptional as they claim.

Nordost ODIN Supreme Reference Cables – $20,000

Using twenty-four conductors made of 99.99999% oxygen free copper with an extruded layer of silver, these cables promise uncompromising sound. The conductors are constructed using a “Precision Dual Micro Mono-Filament” design. I’m not sure what that means, but it certainly sounds awesome. The conductors are arranged in four groups of six conductors for maximum flexibility.

Nordost WHITELIGHT Glass Fiber Optic Cables – about $33,000

Audiophiles have been using fiber optic cables for awhile now, but they’ve always been an expensive option. Toshiba’s TOSLINK connectors (generically known as EIAJ optical) have been in use since the early 80s. The advantage of optical cable is that the optical fibers—strands of clear plastic or quartz glass used to transmit the signal—are not susceptible to the electromagnetic interference that plagues ordinary cables. It’s not surprising, then, that the most expensive audio cable in the world is a fiber optic cable.

Nordost, a company known for their scientific approach to audio/visual cabling, produces the WHITELIGHT fiber optic cable. Made for two-or-more channel audio systems, this expensive cable uses heavily polished, high quality glass fiber with three layers of low loss insulation and an internal damping mechanism to deliver the best possible sound. Each end is capped with a composite TOSLINK connector with precision-polished lenses.

Siltech Emperor Crown – over $40,000

Siltech utilizes both silver and gold metallurgy in the construction of their Signature series of audio cables. Their twenty years of research in the field have allowed them to claim the lowest measured distortion of any brand of audio cable. They do so by reducing the microscopic cracks (crystalline boundaries) in the silver and filling the remaining ones with gold. The Emperor Crown, part of the Signature series, has the distinction of being the most expensive audio cable on the market.

Coat Hanger – Under a buck

The world’s most expensive audio cables may sound nice, but do they actually sound better? According to this rather humorous story, a simple wire coat hanger produces sound that is virtually indistinguishable from that produced by audio cables sold by Monster, another brand known for their relatively expensive consumer cables. Perhaps you should think twice before emptying your wallet for a pair of speaker cables.

A desktop computer can be an expensive investment, but most of that expense usually goes to the monitor and the gear inside the case. After all, an extraordinarily expensive case is still only $600 and nobody’s going to put a case like that over hardware that costs less than two or three times as much, right? Well, what if the case was made of platinum and diamonds? Zeus, a Japanese manufacturer, is selling a computer in just such a case. Their PC, called Jupiter, is the most expensive desktop computer in the world.

Jupiter features a case made of platinum and encrusted with jewels arranged in the shapes of constellations. As for the hardware, Jupiter features Intel’s 3GHz E6850 Core 2 Duo CPU, 2GB of DDR 2 memory, a 1TB hard drive and a dual Blu-Ray/HD DVD drive. Additionally, it ships with a 24” 1920×1200 native resolution monitor.

The world’s most expensive desktop PC has been released in Japan, where it can be purchased for ¥80,000,000 ($748,720 USD). Of course, if you’re on a tight budget then you could opt for gold instead of platinum, reducing the price to ¥60,000,000 ($561,540).

One- and two-way speakers, speakers with only woofers or woofers and tweeters, don’t get a lot of love from the high-end audio industry. Once you’re spending big bucks on loudspeakers, it seems like you might as well go with three- or even four-way speakers. That hasn’t stopped Bowers & Wilkins from releasing their Signature Diamond two-way speaker system. At over $25,000, Signature Diamond loudspeakers are the most expensive two-way speakers in the world.

Created to celebrate the company’s forty year anniversary, the Signature Diamond speakers use cutting edge technologies to deliver clarity of sound beyond that of other two-way speakers. B&W has used Kevlar in their cones for over thirty years and the Signature Diamond system is no exception. Additionally, the Flowport is dimpled (like a golf ball) to reduce wind noise while a cushioned and isolated tweeter prevents vibrations from affecting high frequency output.

The world’s most expensive two-way speakers can be purchased at Bowers & Wilkins dealers in twenty states across the US, including California, New York and Texas.

Would you settle for an enormous widescreen television and 7.1 surround sound system? What if you’re a sound engineer, producer and multimillionaire? Thus is the case with Jeremy Kipnis and the world’s most expensive home entertainment center.

(via OhGizmo!)

The audio portion of the system includes thirty-seven Snell and MuRata speakers attached to thirty-five Mark Levinson, McIntosh and Crown Audio amplifiers as well as thirteen Theta Digital surround sound processers. For video, Kipnis chose a professional-grade Sony video projector and an 18-by-10-foot laboratory-grade motion picture screen. He doesn’t need to worry about media formats, either; the multitude of players included in his system can play Blu-ray discs, HD DVDs, CDs, DVDs, Laserdiscs and even VHS tapes. In case that isn’t enough, there’s a SATA drive that holds 72 hours of HD footage and a PlayStation 3. There’s even a kind of swordfish-shaped model ship thing.

I don’t know what that is.

All told, the most expensive home entertainment center in the world set Mr. Kipnis back a mere $6 million. Considering the sheer number of devices that make up the system, I’d say that’s a bargain.

Nothing says luxury like lazing the hours away in a tub that costs more than a lot of houses. Those looking for such a tub, however, have a few more options than they used to. On the one hand, there’s the elegant, decorative tub that with its simple beauty. On the other hand, there’s the tub with features, gadgets and gizmos.

But which one is the most expensive tub in the world?

The Red Diamond bathtub (via bornrich.org)

The finest example of the latter is the Red Diamond bathtub from Water Games Technologies. Designed by Aldo Puglielli, the bright red tub is big enough for two people. That’s just the beginning of the tubs laundry list of features, however. It also includes a console framed in 18-karat gold—42 grams of 18-karat gold, to be exact—and Swarovski crystals. The console controls two waterproof HDTVs that remain hidden when not in use. Among the tub’s other features are a massage function, multicolored lighting, a hand-held shower unit, automatic disinfection and even a Swarovski-coated Champagne holder. At $47,200, however, the Red Diamond bathtub is not for the faint of wallet.

The Archeo Copper Bathtub

On the other end of the spectrum is Kallista’s Archeo Copper Bathtub. Made of solid copper, the tub is hand-crafted by the very people who refurbished Lady Liberty’s torch. Over five feet long and two-and-a-half feet wide, the tub is spacious enough to comfortably accommodate just about anyone. The fluted faucet and hand-held shower unit are designed with the same aesthetic quality as the rest of the tub, featuring a finely engraved starfish-on-seashell knob. The extravagantly made tub easily takes its place as the world’s most expensive bathtub with its $67,557 price tag—nearly $20,000 more than the Red Diamond!

When BMW introduced their Street Carver in 2001, they proved that they could make skateboards with the same precision engineering as their automobiles. The Street Carver is heavier than most skateboards with its cast-aluminum truck assemblies, wood and fiberglass deck and 110mm wheels. The most notable features of the board, though, are the pendulum arms that work against each other to provide you with a much more stable ride. At $500, the Street Carver was also the world’s most expensive skateboard at the time.

Exkate X-24

Nowadays that title rightly belongs to the Exkate X-24. The evolution of this product began when Louis Finkle, an electronics enthusiast, spent five years creating an electric skateboard with a wireless remote that actually uses the rider’s own body to send signals to the board. Since then, Exkate has made a name for themselves with many permutations of the original electric skateboard.

The most impressive of these, of course, is the X-24. Not only is it capable of reaching twenty miles per hour in only four seconds, it can also accommodate a 275 pound rider. The battery charge lasts for roughly ten miles and can be charged around 400 times. The electronic skateboard can even break from twenty miles per hour in only thirty feet.

When it was available, the X-24 could be purchased for just under $1,000. While it’s currently out of stock, a newer model of the most expensive skateboard in the world will be available sometime this year.

If you were at CES 2008, you may have had the chance to win a Diamond Blackberry Curve Case. If you weren’t the lucky winner or if you weren’t even there, then you can still acquire one through Case-Mate’s website. Of course, if you go that route you’ll be paying top dollar for the world’s most expensive Blackberry case.

The forty-two vvs1 diamonds that went into the creation of this case weigh in at 3.5 carats and are set in 18-karat gold. The emblem on the back of the case is made of the same quality of gold. Even the carbon fiber leather, specially developed for the case, is gold. In fact, a total of fifteen grams of gold were used to make this expensive phone case. Of course, the case is as protective as it is luxurious—the plastic is impact resistant and the screen is entirely protected.

The number of Diamond Blackberry Curve Cases is so limited that it was originally reported that the one given away at CES was the only one. That may have been true at the time, but now the world’s most expensive Blackberry case can be purchased directly from Case-Mate for $20,000. We dare you to find a more expensive case than that.

Hot on the heels of Toshiba’s concession to Sony in the high definition format war, luxury home theatre manufacturer Goldmund has released, in their words, the “first high-end Blu-ray player.” If nothing else, Goldmund’s Eidos 20 BD is certainly the most expensive Blu-ray player on the market.

The player has a number of features to justify its price, of course. The “AC-Curator” power supply circuit, for instance, supposedly improves audio and visual stability. The player is also specially constructed to eliminate vibration and thereby reduce video errors. Furthermore, the player is lovingly crafted with all the aesthetic appeal of an original model VCR (for those of you born after the Industrial Revolution, videocassette recorders are what your primitive forefathers used to pirate movies).

Goldmund is well known in the audio industry for producing high-end, expensive equipment. The Eidos is their first foray into the high-definition video market.

So how much is the world’s most expensive Blu-ray player? It can be purchased for the extremely low price of $16,900.

Have you ever wanted people to put reflectors on their Bluetooth headsets so that you could more easily tell the gadgeteers from the crazies? Amosu Luxury Ltd, a UK-based company specializing in luxury cell phones, has created a headset that seems designed to trick people into doing just that. The lure is that this is also the most expensive Bluetooth headset in the world.

Amosu’s Diamond MotoPure H12 is based on Motorola’s standard H12 headset. The expensive headset filters out background noise using by using two microphones, features three interchangeable ear cushions for maximum comfort and even the standard edition is made of premium materials. The front of the Diamond H12 is made of your choice of 18 karat white or yellow gold and set with 184 diamonds (3.47 ct. total). You even have the choice to opt for white, pink or black diamonds.

Only 100 of the world’s most expensive Bluetooth headsets will be made. They cost around $12,000 and potential owners must wait around three weeks for delivery.

One can only hope that they’re as reflective as they look.

Looking for a top of the line audio system to put in your spacious new SUV? Why not try the world’s most expensive car audio system? Up and coming luxury audio system creators Rogue Acoustics made a splash when they unveiled their premiere car audio system, the RA:1K.

While the RA:1K is highly customizable, the majority of systems will be installed with nine or ten drivers—four tweeters, four mid-range drivers and one or two subwoofers. These will be supported with up to six amplifiers capable of delivering extraordinarily clear sound at equally extraordinary volumes (0.0008% harmonic distortion at 100 watts and a signal-to-noise ratio higher than 115dB). All of these features will ensure that your car stereo will sound better than it ever has.

Drivers used in the RA:1K

Additionally, the central amp will include a cellular connection allowing Rogue technicians to remotely tune the system or even disable it if it’s stolen. The system can even diagnose itself and, if necessary, automatically request that a service appointment be scheduled.

The most basic version of the most expensive car audio system can be purchased for $72,000, but a serious audiophile can spend over $300,000 on all the bells and whistles that may be included.

Prior to the unveiling of the Rogue Acoustics Audio System, Critical Mass’ CES5.1 Electrostatic Surround Sound System was the most expensive car audio system available. It was lauded for the twelve relatively small electrostatic speakers included in the system; such speakers are normally quite large. In fact, the system outfitted four seats with independent left, right and center drivers while a single pair of rear speakers and a UL12 subwoofer dominated the back of the car. Only ten of these systems were made and they were priced at $259,000.

Apple’s MacBook laptop computers may have gotten off to a rocky start in 2006, but that doesn’t mean things can’t get rockier still. Of course, we’re not talking about random shutdowns anymore. No, this time the rocks are diamonds and Swarovski crystals.

Late last year, PowerMax introduced us to the gold-plated MacBook Pro. The 24k gold case, complete with diamond-studded Apple logo, housed a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU and could be purchased in 15.4” and 17” models. At $6499 and $7999, respectively, these are the most expensive MacBook Pros you can get your hands on.

The most expensive MacBook by far, though, is also one of the lightest. The new and extraordinarily thin MacBook Air, featuring a somewhat less powerful 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo processor, has been given the Swarovski treatment and become ot only Apple’s most expensive laptop but also the gaudiest. The Golden Age MacBook Air is coated with 12,000 hand-set Swarovski crystals. These special lead crystals bring out the sparkle in the 24k gold plate that, once again, forms the laptop’s case. Only twenty of the expensive MacBook will be made and it takes about a week to place all those crystals by hand.

The world’s most expensive MacBook is given its crystal makeover by Bling My Thing, a company specializing in crystal customization. It can be purchased for £20,000 (nearly $40k USD) and debuted at CeBIT 2008.
