If you’re a football fan, you’ve probably heard a thing or two about Troy Polamalu’s famous hair. Well, Head and Shoulders certainly have. They’re using the Samoan-descended NFL superstar’s lengthy locks to promote their brand and, in case of unforeseen hair trauma, they’ve insured it for $1 million.

The 29-year-old strong safety received his first haircut in 2000, on advice from his coach at the University of Southern California. The last haircut, however, was seven years ago, and the mass of hair spilling out of his helmet has become one of his most distinctive features. In fact, it’s been said that his whole head of hair, laid end to end, would stretch across 1,100 football fields.

The insurance policy was developed by Watkins Syndicate at Lloyd’s of London. It covers Polamalu’s hair for the entirety of the NFL season.

T-shirts, so called due to their ‘T’ shape, were originally considered undergarments. Nowadays, of course, these ubiquitous shirts are commonly used to express the wearer’s taste in art or music, their political views or their fondness for bad jokes. While T-shirts are usually relatively cheap, sometimes they become collector’s items and enter the ranks of the most expensive T-shirts in the world.

This T-shirt was produced as a promotional item for a Run-D.M.C. concert in the early 80s. Because of the rarity of 80s hip hop tees, especially Run-D.M.C. shirts, and the group’s legendary partnership with Adidas, this shirt has become something of a collector’s item. The back of the shirt features a joint Adidas/Run-D.M.C. “My Adidas” logo.

John Lennon “Home” T-shirt – $16,400

This shirt was originally given to Lennon by Richard Ross, owner of the now-defunct Home restaurant, frequented by Lennon and Yoko Ono, in New York’s Upper East Side. He wore it for several shows and it became such an iconic part of his image that reproductions are available to this day, despite the restaurant’s closure.

Hanes/UNICEF 1996 Olympics T-shirt – $42,000

In the days leading up to the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, Hanes and UNICEF partnered up to raise funds for Olympic Aid-Atlanta, an organization dedicated to helping children in war torn countries, by auctioning T-shirts. The daily auctions raised nearly $1 million for the charitably organization and the highest bid came on the final day of the auctions.

Scarves, without doubt, owe their global popularity to their wide variety of uses. A scarf can keep you warm on a cold day or it can be used to wipe the sweat from your face on a hot day. In 1837, saddlemaker Thierry Hermès founded his company. One hundred years later, Hermès produced their first scarves. Today, Hermès scarves are among the most expensive scarves in the world.

Hermès scarves have been considered traditional heirlooms in France. Their scarves were made from raw Chinese silk spun into a tough fabric and individually screen-printed with designs that sometimes took years to compose. The company still focuses on producing quality, handcrafted goods to this day.

The cheapest of these luxury scarves commands a price of $260. A Hermès dip-dyed giant silk scarf, on the other hand, is priced at $720.

In the 1920s, white linen sheets were de rigueur. That all changed when Madeleine Porthault convinced her husband, Daniel, to offer a home couture collection through his small Parisian lingerie boutique. Their business thrived and many others followed suit, but the D. Porthault name still carries weight among the wealthy and their bath towels are the most expensive towels in the world.

The practice that sets D. Porthault apart from their competitors is that they still silk-screen their prints by hand. This process allows their hand-mixed paints to set deep within the fabric, making their towels and other home coordinates vibrant for a lifetime.

D. Porthault’s most expensive towels are made with 65-gram Egyptian cotton with double-rolled, hand-sewn scalloped edges. These luxury towels are priced over $400 and may be purchased in the US at their New York boutique at 470 Park Ave.

R. Jewels Diamond Edition

Luxury designer Stuart Hughes is at it again, this time in collaboration with Manchester tailor Richard Jewels. Rather than the gold-plated and diamond-encrusted gadgets Hughes is known for designing, this duo has created the most expensive suit in the world.

The R. Jewels Diamond Edition suit has 480 single cut diamonds, 0.5 carats each, studding the Cashmere wool and silk blend that makes up the rest of the suit. It is the flagship creation of the R. Jewels line of luxury suits that Mr. Jewels hopes will “not only capture the eyes but the hearts of the consumers.” The suit is the product of 600 man hours and only three will be made. It’s priced at £599,000 or just under US $900,000.

Alexander Amosu, whose London-based design house is also known for gem-studded phones and accessories, performed a similar feat in 2009. The fabric of his single-breasted suit is made from vicuña wool, the most expensive wool in the world due to its scarcity and stringent regulations on wool-gathering, as well as qiviut, wool made from the coats of muskoxen. It’s also threaded with 18-karat gold and its single button features pave set diamonds.

This fantastic suit took a total of 80 hours to make and was sold to an anonymous buyer for a price of £70,000—over US $100,000.

The word “tuxedo” technically refers to a men’s black dinner jacket, but the term is often used to refer to the entire suit worn to black tie events. Both the term and, supposedly, the fashion originate from New York’s Tuxedo Park, where Griswald Lorillard wore a black dinner jacket to the Tuxedo Club’s annual Autumn Ball.

Italian fashion house Brioni has been making men’s suits since the end of World War II. Each year, their 900 tailors—each of whom must undergo a four year apprenticeship—create 200 different models of men’s suits. Their tuxedos are meant to emphasize a man’s broad-shouldered and narrow-waisted physique. They’re most famously associated with that suave secret agent, James Bond, who has worn Brioni suits since 1995.

Brioni tuxedos start at $3,000 and can cost upwards of $10,000 or more.

When it comes to boots, leather is the material du jour—and the more exotic the leather, the more fashionable the boot. Add in a fashionable designer like Louis Vuitton or, say, Manolo Blahnik and you have a recipe for the most expensive boots in the world.

Spanish fashion designer Manolo Blahnik bought his first boutique, located in London and formerly known as Zapata, in 1972. Since then, he has opened several other boutiques in metropolitan locales such as New York, Dubai and Hong Kong. He has been referenced in music by artists ranging from Beyoncé Knowles to Weird Al Yankovic and television shows from “Will & Grace” to “Angel.”

These boots, featuring heels typical of Blahnik’s designs, are made with alligator skin and reach up to just below the knee. They’re valued at a phenomenal $14,000 and were available at Malano Blahnik’s New York boutique on West 54th Street.

Why not spend some money to protect your precious iPhone? These luxury iPhone cases are made from carbon fiber, Tuscan leather, mahogany, ostrich skin, alligator skin and even gold embellished with diamonds and have prices ranging from $180 to over $100,000.

As a customizable luxury item, however, prices may vary widely based on the materials needed.

Honorable Mention: exo2 Brass Engraved with Wood Insert – $150

Seen in an episode of Fox’s Fringe, “Brown Betty,” EXOvault’s metal iPhone cases are hand-made in Brooklyn, NY. Their latest and most expensive offering features a rosewood inset that provides better reception—and a more pleasing aesthetic—than the aluminum grills on their previous models. This particular model features a beautiful engraving above the insert’s dovetail joint. EXOvault also offers brass and aluminum cases for as low as $110.

The first Barbie dolls were introduced by Mattel, Inc. in 1959. Produced in Japan, their clothing was hand-stitched by home workers. If you think Invisalign braces are expensive, think again. The London Lingual Orthodontic Clinic has developed a process that puts other dental braces to shame—at least in terms of pricing. Their “couture” braces are the most expensive braces in the world.

Unlike other invisible braces, these bespoke braces are very much meant to be seen—once they’re out of your mouth, at least. Until then, they’re bracketed to the backs of the teeth where they remain inconspicuous. Afterwards, however, the gold alloy braces can be used as jewelry.

That’s not the only luxury feature of the braces, though, as they’re custom fit to the teeth using a 3D optical scanner and wax casts. The results are not only comfortable, but also have little effect on the wearer’s speech.

The process costs from £4,000 to £8,500—or approximately US $6,000 to $13,000.

We’ve covered the world’s most expensive bras and panties, but Indian jewelers Orra have another, classier undergarment for you to drool over—the most expensive bustier in the world.

Orra is India’s largest diamond jewelry chain and the most expensive bustier really drives that point home. Valued at €1 million—US $1.35 million—the bustier was modeled by Anjali Lavanya along with a gold lehenga, a type of traditional Indian skirt. The handcrafted Orra Diamond Bustier is studded with a bevy of Belgian diamonds.

The glittering outfit was modeled at a Mumbai event held in honor of a state visit by Belgium’s Prince Philippe and Princess Mathilde. The diamond bustier is particularly appropriate as gems and jewelry account for 75% of trade between Belgium and India.

Bottled water is big business–I mean, really big. In less than ten years, bottled water consumption has doubled, with prices about 100 times that of tap water. Whether you think bottled water is healthier or it tastes better, or even if you happily drink tap water, it’s clear that bottled water is here to stay.

Bling h2o – $40+ per 750 ml bottle

Hollywood writer-producer Kevin G. Boyd tapped into the bottled water market with an image approach. His water, Bling h2o, has been spotted in the hands of numerous celebrities and even at awards ceremonies like the Emmy’s, Grammy’s, and the MTV Video Music Awards.

The water is bottled in Dandridge, Tennessee, probably the least notable quality of the most expensive bottled water. Boyd’s approach to the bottled water market is as extreme as the limited edition bottles themselves. They come frosted, corked, and boasting hand-applied Swarovski crystal. Bling H20 boasts that it has won the gold medal at the Berkely Springs International Water Tasting Festival with its nine-step purification process. If you are a water elitist, be prepared to spend $40-60 for a 750ml bottle. If you are buying your expensive bottled water at a club, be prepared to spend more.

Hawaiian deep seawater – $33.50 per 2 oz bottle

This seawater is so lucrative that the Hawaiian government is now allowing bottlers to use a state-certified logo for their deep seawater for a nominal fee. Hawaii Deep Marine Inc.’s Kona Nigari water, for instance, sells for $33.50 per 2 oz bottle. It’s extracted from a depth of 915 feet, over 700 feet more than is necessary for the water to be considered deep seawater.

Acqua di Cristallo Tributo a Modigliani – $60,000 for a 1.25 ml bottle

The world’s most expensive bottle of water is truly unique. Designed by Fernando Altamirano of Tequila Ley, who holds the records for the world’s most expensive tequila and cognac bottles, the 24k gold-coated bottle is based on the work of late Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Clemente Modigliani. It holds 1.25 ml of blended spring water from France and the Fiji Islands, as well as glacier water from Iceland.

The world’s most expensive bottled water went up for auction on March 4th, 2010. Proceeds from the auction went to the Planet Foundation.

Altamirano also produced a similar “dummy” bottle of gold, silver and platinum festooned with 6,000 diamonds. It was valued at $3.3 million.

The Miss Russia Pageant has only been around since 1993 and, since then, it has produced one Miss Universe and two winners of Miss World (one of whom was, unfortunately, later dethroned). Now, however, the pageant has a new claim to fame—the most expensive beauty pageant crown in the world.

The new Miss Russia crown was unveiled at Imperial Park Hotel & SPA, just outside of Moscow, and will be bestowed upon the pageant’s 2010 winner after she is announced on March 8th. Created by the Yuvelirny Teatr jewelry house, the exquisite crown is made of 18k white gold adorned with 2,358 diamonds totaling 62 carats and fourteen pearls, the foremost of which is an enormous 19 mm.

While this crown is claimed to be the most expensive in the world, its exact value remains unrevealed.

Wingtips, or brogues, may be seen as men’s country shoes, but if there’s one name that can give them an urban edge, it’s Louis Vuitton. That’s why the most expensive wingtips in the world feature the LV monogram.

The Manhattan Richelieu wingtip shoes are made from waxed alligator leather. They’re hand-stitched with Blake construction for a more comfortable fit and the outsole-embedded thread ensures a long-lasting stitch. The interior, meanwhile, sports glove-soft leather lining. Even the sole, made of hand-painted leather and featuring an embedded ruthenium-finished cube with the LV monogram, is high quality.

These luxury wingtips will be offered in Spring/Summer of 2010 for $10,000.

Antique Levi’s jeans

The popular worker’s denim trousers have become modern day fashion and status symbols. Designer jeans come in and out of popularity but in the early 2000s, expensive jeans started coming back into fashion with brands such as APO Jeans, Chip and Pepper, Paper Denim & Cloth, Seven for All Mankind, True Religion and many other brands costing $200 or more per pair.

The Guinness Book of Records listed a pair of Gucci Genius jeans featuring elaborate feathers, beads, rips and buttons as most expensive jeans off-the-rack at a cost of $3,134 and Forbes once showcased Escada’s Swarovski crystal-encrusted jeans that sold for US $10,000.

Levi Strauss Company bid $46,532 to buy a pair of their own brand of denim pants back on the popular auction site eBay. However, the most expensive old jeans were an average pair of 501 jeans manufactured in the 1880s and purchased by a Japanese collector in 2005 for $60,000.

Trashed Denim

None of those prices, however, can even hold a candle to that commanded by Dussault Apparel’s Trashed Denim line of luxury jeans. These men’s jeans are handmade using a special process where they are washed thirteen times, with dying and painting performed between each washing to add depth to the jeans. That’s not all, though, as each pair of Trashed Denim jeans is adorned with sixteen 1-carat rubies, twenty-six .05-carat rubies, eight .05-carat diamonds and 1080 grams of 18k white or rose gold.

So how much are the most expensive jeans in the world? Try a quarter-million dollars. That’s right; Dussault Apparel’s Trashed Denim jeans are priced at $250,000. They can be purchased at the Dussault store in Los Angeles or Kustom in New York City.

Iconic pop artist Andy Warhol strove for a unique and trendsetting look—even going so far as to commission mismatched footwear with patches sewn onto the right shoe. Then, of course, there’s the famous wig he began wearing in the mid-1960s.

While the silver-grey wig was originally intended to cover up his receding hairline, it became an integral part of the Andy Warhol look. In 2006, almost twenty years after Warhol’s death, the wig was sold at a Christie’s auction along with a few other items formerly owned by Warhol. The wig even had Warhol’s toupee tape still attached to its interior.

The wig sold for $10,800, making it one of the most expensive wigs in the world.

Other Warhol memorabilia sold at the auction included a 1977 photo of Muhammed Ali, signed by Warhol, and a 1975 Polaroid of Mick Jagger. The photos sold at $19,200 and $15,600, respectively.

You may not realize it, but there’s something in your purse that just doesn’t fit. You have one of the most expensive cell phones or, at least, one of the most expensive cases. You already know about the world’s most expensive sunglasses, but what about prescription glasses? In 1998, a pair of glasses became the most expensive prescription eyeglasses in the world.

What was so special about these glasses? They were one of two pairs of glasses sold by the widow of Buddy Holly and formerly worn by the legendary Father of Rock and Roll himself. The first pair, auctioned by Sotheby’s in 1990, sold for $50,000. The other pair was worn by Holly during the infamous crash that took his life.
