The most expensive cereal in the world isn’t available in stores. In fact, there’s not enough to fill a whole cereal box—after all, there’s only one “Great Illinois Corn Flake.”
The corn flake was discovered in 2008 by a 15-year-old in Chesapeake who, likely unaware of the monumental importance of her discovery, noted that it looked like Illinois. The significance of this fine anthropological relic, of course, is that Illinois is the second-largest producer of corn in the US.
It soon found its way to eBay, where it was offered with a jewelry box and free shipping. Unfortunately, their first attempt to sell the Great Flake—an auction that reportedly reached $200,000—was barred by eBay’s food policy. They were, however, able to work around the policy by instead selling a coupon redeemable for one Great Illinois Corn Flake. The coupon was sold to TriviaMania.com for $1,350.
Of course, the story of the corn flake’s origin could just have been a marketing ploy like the world’s most expensive french fry.
