Most Expensive Coffee in the World

Written by: tom Filed Under: Food, Luxury, World on December 22nd, 2005

The most expensive coffee in the world does not hail from Jamaica or Hawaii, but instead from Indonesia.

Kopi Luwak the most expensive coffee in the world does exist, and those who drink the expensive coffee insist that it is made from coffee beans eaten, partly digested and then excreted by the Common palm civet, a weasel-like animal.

“Kopi” the Indonesian word for coffee along with “luwak” is local name of this animal which eats the raw red coffee beans. The civet digests the soft outer part of the coffee cherry, but does not digest the inner beans and excretes them.

World’s most expensive coffee

Apparently the internal digestion ends up adds a unique flavor to the beans, removing the bitter flavor, and then beans are then picked up by locals and sold. The most expensive coffee beans can cost up to $600 a pound, and up to $50 per cup, if you can get over the fact that you are drinking such a strange brew.

You would know if you drank the most expensive coffee in the world, because the quantities of it are tiny amounts.

I live in Seattle and I won’t drink that Starbuck’s swill. Eww.

I have to wonder how a coffeehouse might go about importing some of that for retail sale?

Civet cat coffee has been in existence in the Philippine jungles for decades. It has been popular here ever since. I guess Asians have the true best coffees in the world due to its geography, soil texture and climate

Ok, guys. Get over the eating of poop. Guess what milk is? Milk is essentially the same as blood, only white. Eggs are, as my friend once pointed out to me, a chicken’s period. So what? In the meantime, the coffee beans are roasted and ground and passed through boiling hot water to make coffee. Ergo, no “poop” in your coffee. I’d love to try it someday, if I could find out who sells it!

Geisha Coffee from Panama is the second best & most expensive coffee in the world and does not have to go through this “animal process”;) so I guess it is PANAMA that has the best coffee in the World.

  15. Posted by jason 10th July, 2007 at 1:16 pm

I’ve had it before. It’s delicious. I know a guy who bought several ounces of it.

  16. Posted by david sackett 10th July, 2007 at 11:41 pm

I would drink it. You can try anything once.

  17. Posted by Vivienne 16th August, 2007 at 2:41 pm

How unique… I wouldn’t be afraid to try some. It doesn’t sound that bad. Sounds a lot better than chicken carcass rice wine I saw on the travel channel a few days ago. I really wondered how they stuffed whole chickens down a jug. Creepy.

It is funny how humans are so skittish about certain things like Kopi Luwak Most us eat from restaurants and you can be assured that not all workers wash their hands when they should, I have to complain to managements of restaurants about workers that I have witnessed not washing their hands. We all go to eateries and order food which is handled by attends that handle money and the food with out washing their hands. Money is one of the filthiest things we pass around. There is a proverb in Jamaica
” Scornful dog eat dirty pudding.” These beans are washed, parched or roasted and brewed with intense heat. I would gladly drink some of this coffee!

The reason the coffee is considered the finest in the world is because the Civet eats only the absolute ripest of beans. So essentially, you’re getting a cup of handpicked, hand-shelled beans. Except instead of hands, it’s an anus. But as someone said, the things are roasted at hundreds of degrees then nearly boiled. There would be absolutely no smell, taste, texture, or remnants of any kind of poop.

  21. Posted by Jes 28th February, 2008 at 1:11 pm

I’m actually ordering some right now! Can’t wait to try it.

  22. Posted by Danyella 7th March, 2008 at 1:56 pm

It’s on the movie the bucket list haha. Sounds gross but i have heard it tastes good.

  23. Posted by Pinky 9th March, 2008 at 9:50 pm

I am not sure if I would taste it or not. I guess if I would smell it brewing in the kitchen in the morning and it smelled good to me I would try it no matter where it came from. Just for a giggle watch the movie ‘The Bucket List” Where Jack Nicholson drinks it and has a great laugh near the end of the movie over the beverage. It is natural and I have seen people totally pollute there bodies with things I would never.

here in my country ( philippines) that coffee bean is called “Alamid” and it is really a poop from the same named animal ‘alamid’. for the record, this animal is only fed by coffee bean itself and cultured. i myself enjoys drinking this coffee. for the price? 1 cup = Php1500, or $150 per cup =D ….
    enjoy^^

  31. Posted by Gerald Logue 9th August, 2008 at 3:15 pm

you’ll wonder how they’d came up with this idea, drying coffee beans and brewing from animals poop that turns out good and be the most expensive one. hurrrah!!!!

  33. Posted by dan wells 14th September, 2008 at 12:38 am

Why can’t I eat them beans and poop them out myself? If the civet can do it and make pricey coffee, so can I !

Kopi Luwak become the most expensive coffee in the not because its taste good.It is because this product is very rare. Whole Indonesia only produce 800KG per annum

wow that is quite disterbing some things are better left unknown lol

In the Netherlands it’s not that expensive, say US 100 for 100 grams. It’s really good but neither the best nor the most expensive coffee you can get here.

  39. Posted by Dewayne 16th January, 2009 at 12:55 am

I have to correct you guys on this…Chuck Norris makes the most expensive coffee in the world. He poops the civet that poops the beans that makes your coffee so good and high priced.

  40. Posted by jeremy 16th January, 2009 at 8:26 pm

Sorry, Dewayne, but we’re only counting coffee that the human body can contain.

  41. Posted by novi 18th January, 2009 at 9:03 am

Kopi Luwak is definitely from Indonesia..it is not from Philippines..
as the name is kopi luwak,,kopi means coffe in Indonesian, and luwak is the animal’s name.
But maybe Philippines has a kind of coffe like this too.

it is expensive not only because it is rare, but also the smell and taste of it.
The animal,Luwak only choose the best coffe bean,it has instinct to choose the best coffe bean. That’s why Kopi Luwak tastes soooo goood :D

Well,,if you come to Indonesia, you can try the other coffe, there are many other coffe in Indonesia which smell and taste super good with low price.

  42. Posted by Ryan 23rd January, 2009 at 11:32 am

This coffee is nothing special. The experience is similar to any average coffee you will find at your local grocery store. I had big expentations but every place I have tried this brew it has let me down.

  45. Posted by Liz 1st February, 2009 at 1:17 am

Have actually tried it at the coffee plantation in Bali, it wasn’t strained properly so it was a bit grainy, but the flavour was OK. The animal that does the deed is actually a bit like a raccoon or possum. Still prefer my favourite coffee shop Kafenio in Cronulla.

  46. Posted by Rajneesh Goyal 2nd February, 2009 at 5:51 am

the people who harvest the digested beans don’t really have to pick through cat litter to get it. The animal processes the beans and excretes them whole, unscratched, and without dung.

The animal is a palm civet, a dark brown tree-dwelling cat-like creature found throughout Southeast Asia. The scientific name is paradoxurus hermaphroditus.

    So just Enjoy the coffee….

  47. Posted by Rajneesh Goyal 2nd February, 2009 at 5:52 am

the palm civet just happens to like to ingest the ripest and reddest coffee beans, which also happen to be the ones best for brewing. The cat eats the outer covering of the beans in the same way that is accomplished by de-pulping machines. Something happens to the beans in the journey through the cat’s intestines that gives it a flavor that is celebrated by coffee drinkers

    so Enjoy…

I’ve been cramming whole bean coffee down my cat’s throat for some time now. I think ebay is a great place to originate a new strain of coffee called “American Feline Anusbus”) and sell it for (“Buy It Now!”) $500/lb.–a bargain when considered that the civet poop bags $600.

  54. Posted by X 20th May, 2009 at 2:52 pm

I’m not a coffee fun but I went to Indonesia and cheked as it was cheaper than a Starbucks Caramel Machiato Ventti from Amsterdam Airport……..and the tast of this coffee I need to admit that is excelent. No need for sugar and is not leaving in your mouth any strange taste as the normal coffee. Strongly recommended if you visit Indonesia but ask some local guys from where to buy it because in 5****** restaurants they will charge you with a fortune for the same stuff…

  55. Posted by Philippe 11th June, 2009 at 8:38 am

I live in Indonesia and there is a small equivalent to Starbucks that is actually called Coffe Luwak, the coffe is a little bit more expensive than a regular coffe, the thruth is I foubd out where the coffe came from after a few months of regular drinking, so it was not a real shock.
I tried coffe from West Papua, it has a lot of caracter and is quite good also. Hope theses guys will be able to export it, it is cultured in a remote mmountainous area, and the beans have to be flown out there.

If you think starbucks tates like sh*t, imagine how poop tastes like!

  57. Posted by Ed 17th June, 2009 at 3:55 pm

I had a chance to try some last week, and it was amazingly good. And because they have to be so meticulous about cleaning it, it actually has less bacteria than regular mass-produced coffee.

Now to find an authentic source for it. There are tons of web sites claiming to sell it, but like everything else, most are fakes, everything from pre-picked beans fed to caged civets, to regular flavored coffee in fancy bags. :(

  58. Posted by taylor 23rd June, 2009 at 10:06 pm

ive tasted it before its really sweet and you really do not need to put in sugar r nothing but i liked it the first couple of sips then it just got to sweet for me i dont know why though

One of the best coffes in the world and your pocket still in good conditions( Alto Grande) The Vatican and European Royalty consume that stuff but the wars and hurricanes destroy the distribution. Serve in Japan in the best restaurants the only coffe cualified in Japan 95%.

    What a laugh!
I wonder if a Grizzly Bear ate some; or a Water Buffalo did; or, maybe a Duck?? Would there be the same blind romanticisim?

Insipid are we who have never tried this; as one avid commentator for humankind-”Meno” has blerted in the lines above!

Insipid, whatever you reckon; I remember being disgusted by an article in an “Easyrider” magazine; wherein it was written that some prefer the tangy taste of feline droppings upon their steak to gravy…
    ” The runnier, the better!”
Does that make me insipid because of my utter disgust over digesting the droppings of another creature?
Are you insipid to that point, “Meno”?
I honestly don’t care if you wrote the easy- rider article.
    Don’t judge us!

Not for this puppy; living foecal colliforms are most probably eradicated by the roasting and brewing processes of this, most unusual of beverages; and those who want to pay top dollar for the thrill of drinking coffee; with a hint of reconstituted gastro- intestinal juices from an animal that is wandering towards the endangered- species list… don’t hang off too long hey!

    YOU MIGHT MISS OUT!
    Peace and love to all!

I was reading these comments and I have to say…you guys crack me up. How true most of it is. Got to thinking about whoever decided to eat an egg. “Oh look what fell out of that chickens butt, let’s eat it!”. Can’t begin to imagine what prompted someone to drink milk but thank goodness they did. The things people do out of necessity such as searching thru kitty grunt for coffee beans and then brewing it. Saw the documentaries on it and they say it is the best cup of joe you will ever drink and I would love to try it. Not big on Starbucks but I would try the civets version although not sure why I would even think of doing it other than….I just gotta see what the hype is all about!!!! Thank Goodness for Google….y’all made my morning….all over a discussion about coffee in the office this morning. I will laugh about this for days!!!

  75. Posted by Frank 25th September, 2009 at 3:00 pm

It is true that the coffee has existed in the Philippines for decades as has been pointed out on the above posts but somehow Indonesia gets cited more often for reasons that the Philippines is always overlooked among Asian countries in many ways or another. However, a kittie litter does not necessarily translate into a brew though I understand the sarcasm. I won’t mind having that coffee.

  76. Posted by DVE MD 25th September, 2009 at 7:49 pm

It may sound gross and taboo…i have tasted this kind of coffee from our country, the PHILIPPINES…like from the previous posts, it is from the droppings of a wild civet. It really chooses good quality coffee cherries while leaving the beans undigested for picking.. it may sound disgusting but essentially its taste is good..the aroma is the same but theres this tinge of chocolate for me.. im no expert in coffee tasting but this is what it taste like for me.. its worth to taste this kind of coffee at our time since it does not affect the life of the wild civet..as previously stated..the civet is currently an endangered specie…so i m just glad that i tasted this rare kind of coffee before the civet hits the history books..worth to try!!!

  77. Posted by Chardennay 1st October, 2009 at 7:51 pm

I first heard of this coffee in the movie -’The Bucket List’.
Like the characters in the movie, my spouse has cancer – his is a very rare type – (95% chance that it is treatable) He likes his coffee, said he would like to try it, so I have ordered 4oz for $85.00. Small price to pay to bring a smile to the one I love.

  78. Posted by dj 5th October, 2009 at 6:56 pm

People can eat chitlins which are intestines but they can’t eat predigested cofee beans have u people actually seen the beggining of ur milks journey to that carton kopi luwak is an interesting coffee n tastes ok but if it was given to u before u learned the price u would be a little stunned. It has a nice natural taste but there are much cheaper ways 2 flavor coffee to ur liking

  83. Posted by Janet 11th November, 2009 at 4:30 am

Hi! I know that there is this kind of coffee that exists in the Philippines and was exhibited in New York City some years ago and it’s called COFFEE ALAMID. Alamid is the equivalent of palm civet in the Philippines. If my memory serves me right, the manufacturer of this kind of coffee is from Laguna or Batangas I think. It was also featured as the ‘most expensive’ coffee in the world, last year or 2 years ago.

  84. Posted by Satrio 13th November, 2009 at 12:09 am

actually, “luwak” poop is not like you see in any other animal dungs, and actually, this is the best coffee in the world. and for those that say it is not came from indonesia….think again, its international name is luwak coffee. and this is delicious.

  85. Posted by Aimen 3rd December, 2009 at 10:34 am

Hmmmmm its delicious. I live in Pakistan and their is no trend of drinking coffee.About 95% of Pakistani drink tea.I drink greentea. But I love coffee too.

For a gift I have been trying to locate the sale of this particular luwak coffee pictued above this article. I like the box and display of the product. I have been shopping online, but most of what I have located is in bags. I’ve found 3 websites with boxes that are different and not as nice. Anyone know where I can find it or something very similar?

I have had Alto Grande and it is awesome coffee. I tried to find the plantation once while visiting in Puerto Rico, but couldn’t find it. Supposedly the coffee come from the west side of the island south of Areocibo. My advice, skip the partially digested coffee bean for Alto Grande.

    you’ll never expect..

To those who think the coffee is disgusting, you are stupid

  92. Posted by handy 28th December, 2009 at 5:42 am

i’ve seen many critics here, but do you realize that you must experience it first then you have the right to criticize? you said you’ll puke, you won’t tried it, you’re very disguisted of it, but one question remains the same, HAVE YOU TASTE IT???

i also see comments from those who already tried it, and they’re all share the same comments “a very delicious coffee in the world”, so those people have already taste the real one, and not disguisted by it, and said that it’s a good coffee, worth to try.

as one once said, “you wouldn’t know how it turns out until you do/try it”.

for you guys who haven’t try it, don’t bother “barking” here just because you think you’re clever, stop the cowardness and taste it. it won’t kill you either, so what’s the problem of tasting it?

come to indonesia, drink the civet coffee, afterwards, show your respect if you feel it delicious, if you don’t, then you have all the permission to bark for how bad the taste of it.

DON’T JUDGE THE BOOK BY ITS COVER

It becomes the most expensive coffee because the civet only eat the quality coffee beans…
    It’s from Sumatra, Indonesia…
    I’ve tasted it… It’s really good… I know because I’m from Indonesia…
Don’t be disgusted by it, where do you think eggs come from? the chicken’s head? Yet, you still ate it with bacon…

All coffee goes through what some might describe as a ‘disgusting process’ , that is it gets fermented.

Having tried ‘fresh roasted’ Kopi Luwak all I can say is that it was good coffee but, whilst fairly balanced it had identical or slightly less flavour intensity than beans from the same region. It has absolutely nothing unique about the flavour to make it distinctive. I could rattle off any number of plantations that offer really affordable beens that make a better example of balance than this.

In summary a complete rip off similar to the Emporers New clothes. The Civet is about as good at picking the best berries as your half blind grandma, if it’s hungry it eats a few that aren’t as ripe, the real sorting is done by people to get rid of the brokens and imperfects after the animal has done the poop. Just have a look at one of the poo pics to see the lack of uniformity and imperfects that are in the beans of a poop log.

So like all coffee this stuff is only ‘good’ if the roast is less than 14 days old. Pre-ground stuff or that ‘boxed roasted bean’ set pictured like any ‘old and stale’ coffee would taste crap (pardon the pun).

There are many distinctive flavours of coffee to be found throught the world in various plantations, that actually have something about them worth the price. Hacienda la Esmeralda Geisha, Panama is a bean that is pricey but, pretty unique.

Got to take your hat off to the marketing though ;-D

this is disgusting !!! don’t tell me that there is no difference between poo and milk??!!! or poo and eggs!!! even if it’s boiled and cleaned…etc. If you boil my poo and add hot water to it and lots of sugar it might become more expensive than this little racoon’s poo…hahahaha
