Written by: tom Filed Under: Real Estate, United States on November 10th, 2005In 2005, Hurricane Katrina the 11th named tropical storm of the 2005 Atlantic season became the most expensive hurricane ever. The hurricane was the third strongest of the season, behind both Hurricane Wilma and Rita.
The damage from Hurricane Katrina, has been estimated between $70 to $130 billion, making it the most expensive hurricane ever, even above Hurricane Andrew which was previously the most expensive natural disaster in U.S. history. Over one million people were displaced by Hurricane Katrina, and over 1300 lives lost.
Hurricane Katrina first made landfall as a Category 1 north of Miami, Florida on August 25, 2005, then again made landfall on August 29 along the Central Gulf Coast in Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane. The storm surge soon breached levees protecting New Orleans from Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River. There was other major damage in the coastal regions of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
This and made Katrina the most destructive and costliest hurricane and natural disaster in to take place in the United States. Hurricane Andrew, which raged from August 16 to August 28 in 1992, was previously the most expensive hurricane in the United States, costing $45 billion.
