Most Expensive Wines in the World

The word wine has its root from the ancient Greek word for vines, vinos. Grapevines produces lush grapes which are then fermented to create the popular yet sophisticated alcoholic drink we know as wine. In many areas, the English word wine and its synonyms in different languages are protected by law, as other beverages similar to wine can be produced from fruits, rice, flowers and honey.

At the highest end, rare, super-expensive wines are often the costliest item on the menu, and exceptional vintages from the best vineyards may sell for thousands of dollars per bottle. Expensive red wines with their complex subtleties are traditionally more costly than other expensive wines.

Here are the most expensive wines in the world.

World's Most Expensive Wines - Screaming Eagle

1992 Screaming Eagle
around $80,000

At Auction Napa Valley 2008, a charity event, a lot of six magnums of Screaming Eagle were sold for $500,000. In addition to the wine, the lot included a dinner at the winery. The lucky purchaser was Chase Bailey, an executive at Cisco Systems.

World's Most Expensive Wines - Chateau Mouton-Rothschild

1945 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild Jeroboam
$114,614

Sold to an anonymous buyer at a Christie’s auction in 1997, this bottle comes from what is considered by wine enthusiasts to be one of the finest vintages of the 20th century.

World's Most Expensive Wines - Th.J 1787 Chateau Lafitte

“Th.J” 1787 Chateau Lafitte
$160,000

A bottle of 1787 Chateau Lafitte which sold at Christie’s London in December of 1985, this wine was originally reported to be from the cellar of Thomas Jefferson, the former US President, and this most expensive bottle of wine had the initials Th.J etched into the glass bottle. It made its way into the hands of American tycoon Bill Koch, who became suspicious of the origins of the four bottles he had purchased. Eventually, he instigated the investigation that debunked the supposed origin of what was, at the time of purchase, the most expensive wine in the world.

World's Most Expensive Wines - Shipwrecked 1907 Heidsieck

Shipwrecked 1907 Heidsieck
$275,000

These hundred year old bottles of Champagne from the Heidsieck vineyard in Champagne took over eighty years to reach their destination. Shipped to the Russian Imperial family in 1916, a shipwreck off the coast of Finland caused this champagne to be lost at sea until divers discovered over 200 bottles in 1997. Now they’re finally being sold—to wealthy guests at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Moscow, at least. Of course, the wine’s extraordinary tale and incredible age are what makes it the world’s most expensive wine.

I worked at a high end restaurant that had an extensive wine collection. The most expensive wine i remember ran around 15 grand. 160 grand is just outrageous! I dont miss the wine migraines.

The Th.J bottles were debunked in a 2007 issue of the New Yorker. Apparently the wine broker who “discovered” the bottles in France is a charlatan & is highly suspected of fabricating the ruse bottles and contents. The price, however, paid is what is reported here — so that means, even if the product is fraudulent the price paid is real.

I am currently drinking the Chateau Lafite, and I own three bottles. as expensive as it may be, its not the best wine I’ve had. my fathers got a collection that has wines half the price, twice better. you’ve just got to know your wines. kudos to Chateau Lafite but im sorry its just another sunday afternoon, there’s better and cheaper out there..

Reply

Oh, and the Heidsieck is Champagne, as stated, bubbly, and thus not wine. Shouldn't be on this list.

Reply

I bet the people who bought those wines would’t even be able to tell between their quarter million bottles and a good rioja 2001.
I feel pity for them.

The thing about these expensive wines is that they should never be drunk. They are an investment, and should be continuousy cellared and sold through the generations. Not only is drinking them a poor return on investment (because the value simply isn’t there), but by removing the bottle from existence erases its legacy and its future story forever. That is sad. In my cellar, I have some great bordeaux from 1982, and know that I will likely never drink them. That is just the way it is.

The most expensive wine I’ve bought and drunk is a flight of 1966 DRC and I’m not sure it was worth it. It held up remarkably for about 2 hours, and then it fell over pretty quickly, so me and my friends had to down pretty fast after that. In future, I will remember to open one at a time.

Hi everybody, my name is Erici Parentoni, you might of heard the name before at some Italian auctions.. IAM the biggest wine and liquor purchaser in the world, as far as private consumer purchaser. I have bought most of the most expensive btl’s in the world… I do not own a company, neither am i a restaurant owner. I buy the best alcohol in the world as known or said and test it’s credibility of taste..Although i am a very fortunate heritage billionaire , i do understand most of these wines or liquors are over prized!! trust me when i say this, i have tried lots of expensive liquors, wine, beer, etc, i tend to enjoy the one’s sold as there well drink special at a neiborhood bar.. we pay for the name brand in this life!! for anything and everything!! i can afford to by a whole restaurant or liquor store i still think it is ridiculous to buy alcohol for that much money!!!! there are people starving out there and need much more help than us people with money spending on nonsense!!! i have bought expensive bottles of alcohol in my life before, especially 1920 mccallen’s btl worth 120,000 us dollars!! not worth it!! at some point we tend to wanna spend money for nothing just cause we can!! this expensive alcohol you are seeing on this website tastes no better than the one you are buying currently for lots cheaper… i tend to think a publix btl of wine known as stone cellars cab. tastes better than the eagle eye 12th priced at 120,000 us dollars!! just an example!! i’am willing to send a bottle of expensive courvoisier coingac to anyone who answers my post first… worth 75,000 dollars… i have 2 and don’t appreciate it so much!! write me if you do do.. it will be my pleasure to send it to you if you are going to use it for a good cause and a special occasian!! goodluck to you all!! there are many better things to do with money than to spend it on this!!! god bless…

Ciao, Erici Parentoni! I’d love to have a bottle of your expensive wine! I will tell you my story and what I will use your wine for if you write me. I’d rather not have my personal information or life displayed to the public.

You are a very kind person and your generosity will not go unnoticed. I am anxious to meet someone that has a heart of gold, as I have one, too.

Thank you for the opportunity to receive your wine.
