Most Expensive Aquarium Fish

Written by: jeremy Filed Under: Luxury, World on July 11th, 2008

Some consider fish to be the perfect pets. They don’t make a mess, don’t smell bad, don’t make noise, don’t need to be walked and you can put a bunch of them in the same room without worrying about your house getting torn up. You don’t even need to pet them. Of course, you may want to pay just a bit more attention to your fish tank if one of its inhabitants happens to be the most expensive aquarium fish in the world.

World's most expensive aquarium fish

This particular aquatic vertebrate is a 15” platinum arowana owned by Aro Dynasty, a Dragon fish breeder based out of Singapore. Its white coloration is an exceedingly rare mutation of the rather common arowana. It is, however, not entirely perfect; its right eye has turned downward. This is a common problem with arowanas—so common, in fact, that many keepers are paying for cosmetic surgery for their prized arowanas.

Aro Dynasty has been offered $80,000 for the platinum arowana. A UK importer even offered the fish for £200,000 (nearly US $400,000). Unfortunately, the fish is not for sale. While we can’t entertain any hopes of ever owning it, those who attended Aquarama 2007 can still say that they have seen the world’s most expensive aquarium fish.

My husband and I used to have an Arowana named Marley.
I bought him when he was a baby about 2 inches long for $12. Five years later he grew to 2 feet living in our 50 gallon tank living off of live feeder gold fish. Tragedy struck when we had a need to clean/fix the tank he was in. We transferred him and all the other fish we had to another tank that only had a heater in it. When my husband returned home from work the heater was broken and Marley was dead. All we could gather was that he must have snapped at the heater when it was on (glowing orange) mistaking it for a gold fish, swallowing glass. Distraught, my husband buried him in the yard. Where as for me, I thought what great fillets we could have had. Had I known it was the most expensive fish (somehow I find that hard to believe) we should have had it stuffed. Anyway, he was an awesome fish. Very prehistoric.

I am also one of the fan of Aquarium fish. I have lots of expensive goldfish and other fish too. But i don’t know why these fish (Arowana) are so expensive rather than other fish. They looks like fish which we eat in our meal. Why people are crazy about Arowana?

  15. Posted by Koushik Mondal 12th January, 2010 at 2:31 pm

arowanas are certainly an exotic fish,..but i’d rather have an emperor angelfish or a flowerhorn,..in its place,…at least they are brightly coloured,…aroeanas are really dull. However, if someone sees any royal blue colored arowana,..i.e., if they exist,..i might be interested…

Im very suprised that this is the most expensive fish just because of its colouration. Arowanas tend to change colour as they grow according to their enviorement and water. And this particular type, is just a normal arowana, also called “kelisa” by local malaysians, Cheap somemore!!! kah.kah.kah….Becomes ugly when it gets old. the dragon-red,gold etc are much better lookin! I would have expected a rare marine fish to be the most expensive. Anyway, hope some other fish wins this title soon. chow!
