World’s Most Expensive Cookies

Who doesn’t like cookies—and spending exorbitant amounts of money on them? Okay, maybe the latter isn’t quite as popular as the former. Still, who would pass up the chance to take a bite out of the world’s most expensive cookies?

There’s an apocryphal story that’s been passed around the internet for over a decade now that involves some rather expensive cookies. A woman and her daughter are dining at a Neiman-Marcus café and decide to try the cookies for a light dessert. Impressed with the cookies, the woman asks for the recipe. The waitress replies that she can sell the recipe for a mere “two-fifty.” The woman happily agrees.

Later, the woman finds she’s been charged no $2.50 but $250. Despite the misunderstanding, Neiman-Marcus refuses to offer a refund. Full of righteous indignation, the woman decides to share the recipe with as many people as possible. As such, the story is usually accompanied by a recipe for the fabled Neiman-Marcus cookies.

As far as I’ve seen, no two tellings involve the same recipe for these “most expensive” cookies.

World's Most Expensive Cookies

Amusing stories aside, we couldn’t end this entry without some factual information about the most expensive cookies in the world. In 2007, a rare William Crawford and Sons cookie tin from the 1920s was sold at a London auction. The tin, originally sold for just over $150, was auctioned off for $32,000. The tin was remarkable for two features—its shape, a toy car with electric lights, and the fact that it still contains its original contents.

So—who would pass up the chance to take a bite out of the world’s most expensive cookies? I think I would.
